And presumably the old christian?/protestant? ritual of " churching " is connected - anybody know anything about that? And presumably the old christian?/protestant? > ritual of " churching " is connected - anybody know anything about that? Well..(sometimes I wish I had never said anything!! Me and my big mouth!!!) Oh well, in for a penny... Even though the idea of being ritually unclean for part of the month may seem bizarre, it does have its benefits. Women aren't always touchy feely and wanting sex, and to have a few days a month where their bodies are their own and their husbands can relate to them on a more spiritual rather than physical level. Secondly it definitely helps to keeps a relationship alive; *not* being able to have sex makes it all the more desirable and prevents sexual boredom setting in. Our laws were given many thousands of years ago, true, but a lot of Biblical laws have been proven to have bases in more than just bizarre ritual. It is said that couples who observe the laws of family purity (plus whose men are circumcised) have almost a nil percent incidence of cervical and/or penile cancer. I had a positive smear test scare after Yeshaya was born, but even my gynae said : " oh you keep the laws...you will be all right. I have found cervical cancer in orthodox Jewish women only *very* rarely indeed. " Ruthie (scared of having opened Pandora's box!)

Sorry, Ruthie, I don't think I phrased my question very well. What I meant was why uterine as opposed to vaginal. I accept that there is an element of something being unclean (which is I think what " churching " is all about and which I have to say my bra-burning side is a bit uncomfortable with) but I am surprised that it should be the uterus which cause the problem when its only function is to nurture new life. Um, because it is menstrual/post childbirth bleeding which renders a woman " unclean " ...a little cut of the vagina or cervix, such as would be resulting from a smear test for example, wouldn't count. I don't know the reason *why* this is, to be honest. Ruthie
