Elaine -

I don't know if you have any idea about this or not, but here goes. I've

heard that people with autoimmune diseases shouldn't get vaccines because of

the stimulatory effect before. My question is, why do docs push diabetics to

get vaccines every year then? Isn't diabetes an autoimmune disease too? My

diabetic spouse just had his appointment and they arm-twisted him into

getting the flu shot, pnuemonia shot, and a tetanus shot. Last year he had

to get the flu and pnuemonia shot, too. Is there something particular about

diabetics? Is it better for them to get the shots or not?

Just curious.

Hi ,

Diabetics often have trouble fighting off certain infections, particularly

wound infections, so that may be your doctor's reasoning, but I think many

doctors would still object to the vaccines because of the immune stimulation.

Take care, Elaine

I think they're using metabolic disorder as a catch all phrase, coaxing

anyone who has ever been ill to step on the bandwagon. We run what's called a

metabolic panel these days, and it picks up kidney disorders, liver

disorders, electrolyte imbalances, etc.

The hospital where I work also gives free vaccines, and the flyers lining the

halls make it seem like everyone needs a vaccine right now.

Odd since they never exactly know what strain of flu will be predominant in

any given year. And they never mention the risks like Guillain-Barre

syndrome. Needless to say, I passed too.

Also, to add to this thread, they gave out free flu shots here at work this

year. (I opted not to get one, BTW). The literature they were passing

around from the CDC said that people with metabolic disorders should be

among the first to get the shot--along with the elderly. Of course, I take

what the CDC says with a grain of salt, since there agenda is always

questionable, but I thought it odd that I'd heard elsewhere that we should

NOT get them and they're saying we should. Are they referring to some other

metabolic disorder other than thyroid disease?
