Brief description of the project Migrant farm workers are an essential part of the U.S. economy, yet their working and living conditions are among the poorest in the Nation. One area of particular concern to EPA is the safety of the drinking water within farm worker communities. A variety of contaminants may affect drinking water quality, including pesticides and nitrates from agricultural runoff, lead and biological contaminants. Although the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 regulates public water systems, many migrant community drinking water sources may be untested and unregulated because of the small number of people served by the individual systems. From 2001 - 2002, EPA Region 8, with the assistance of the US Department of Labor and other partners, sampled drinking water on a random basis throughout the State of Colorado. Research done as part of the early phase of this project identified Weld County as having a large number of migrant farm workers. In this next phase of the Project, throughout 2002, EPA Region 8 will sample drinking water from 30 migrant farm worker camps, most in Weld County. EPA will initiate this effort by interviewing the owners and / or operators of the 30 farms. EPA will offer to the growers free testing of well water for a range of potential contaminants, provide resources for growers to go to for technical assistance, and communicate the results of the sampling effort to all interested stakeholders. also, here is our fact sheet (See attached file: phase2mfwrproject.wpd) Thanks for your interest! Guest guest
Lou - where in the Valley did you sample? I work out of Starr Co. We do extensive diabetes and cardio-vascular research and have for 20 years. We have participated in and supported research with migrant farm workers in the county. I'm curious about your research. Did you work with Bob (UTSPH) at all? -----Original Message-----From: Lou Siantz [mailto:MLS26@...]Sent: Friday, April 26, 2002 12:12 PM GroupsSubject: Re: [ ] Are you conducting research? My research focus is with farm worker children and families. Dear Egroup Members: Please forward information about research you are conducting on behalf of farmworkers or research that may benefit farmworkers. A spread sheet with this information has been started but it is woefully slim. Surely there is more going on out there. Please do not assume that we already know what you are doing. No project is too small. If you are interviewing farmworkers we want to know about it. The benefits of having this information in one place will be great for future research. I will publish the spread sheet I have in the near future but I would like to have more information in it before doing so. Please provide us with the following information Name of your organization Name of Project Officer or contact person Phone number/email address Brief description of the project Thanks for your assistance.
