I have tried SCD a couple of times just for a few days. All I tried was the Welch's grape juice that they recommend. I do not tolerate it. Haven't tried the honey, but pretty sure I would not tolerate that. > I know not to go overboard on the fruit & honey. Digestive enzymes and betaine hcl are likely to help. When was your hair test and what did it say about blood sugar? Ca/Mg ratio is the blood sugar ratio - should be in 4-30 range. -- > Can anyone give me any guidance on how yeast affects blood sugar and > also if SCD (w/fruit & honey) would effect blood sugar? > > Sam >

If you are interested in the SCD you really need to read the book, " Breaking the Vicious Cycle " , and read as much as you can find on internet sites. The advise is to start on the beginner diet, which is very limited, and stay on the beginner diet for 2 days to a week depending on how bad symptoms are. Then there is a sequence of how soon certain things can be added and rules about what can be added when. Starting on the beginner diet is very important. When I first tried SCD I didn't know this and I wasn't getting better until I searched and found the beginner diet. First off, the list of legal and illegal foods has to be handy because at first a person needs to refer to that list all the time and read every single ingredient on any packaged foods. I remember reading that honey can be added only if tolerated and that some people can't tolerate honey at first. Another point was that any food that could not be tolerated before trying the SCD should not be introduced until after a long time on the diet and all symptoms (diarrhea, gas, cramping, bloating, etc) had cleared. At first vegetables are to be cooked. And seeds weren't to be introduced until I forget how many months on the diet. It's not like all fruits are legal. Some are. Bananas, for example, have to be overripe, mostly black. I don't care for them that way so only use them to make banana cake. Dole juices and welch's juices are legal because they don't have any added sugar. Every other juice is illegal. If some food is added and it causes diarrhea, gas, or some other symptom it is to be taken away! > I'm not sure if I have > hypoglycemia or not but do know that something is not right with my > blood sugar. I've > had regular fasting blood sugar tests and test fine. > If you have adrenal problems you likely have problems with hypoglycemia even if sugar tests are usually within the normal range. What happens is if there is a blood sugar peak, it makes a person feel real good (zoom, zoom, zoom, is how it makes me feel), but then what follows is a blood sugar crash. When blood sugar crashes something has to happen because the brain needs a steady concentration of sugar, so the adrenals are called on to increase blood sugar, and because they are fried they can't do it, and that leads to sugar cravings, and other symptoms (for me usually emotional, my brain isn't able to make much sense about anything at that stage). > Can the yeast make me have blood sugar reactions? The thing about yeast, or even bacterial dysbiosis, is that on the SCD the only sugars that are allowed are simple sugars that are readily absorbed quickly and because they are absorbed so quickly they aren't available for opportunists. Disaccharides and polysaccharides are not allowed, so they are not around to feed the yeast and other opportunists. If the opportunists aren't being fed their populations will decrease. One would still have to try to maintain a fairly steady blood sugar level, something like a diabetic would have to , in order to have not too much and not too little simple sugars taken in at one time. That is easy to do on the SCD but one would have to make a point of making sure that each meal and snack is balanced, not too heavy on the sugars at any one time. And, I really think that maintaining steady blood sugar levels has more to do with adrenal problems than with yeast problems. I was wonering if > SCD cleared up or put yeast under control if that would make the > fruit & honey ok for me. > It may be that honey and some fruits would have to be avoided at first but hopefully with time on the diet fruit and honey would be ok for you. I'm not going to guess how long on the diet it would take! > Also, the SCD sounds too good to be true b/c of the fruit & honey. > But I can't go on any longer on just meat & vegetables. I did very well on that diet, but even better on the SCD. When I started the SCD it was like I was ravenous for a whole bunch of foods that I had previously not been eating (coconut, dates, peanut butter, HONEY, butter, cheese, and so on) and I did go nuts at first and put on a lot of weight. I do think that the SCD is right for me but I really have to force myself to be more balanced, and have some meat and vegetables with my honey/almond biscuits. I expect that you would have to be real careful too. What works for me is if I always have vegetables washed and nibble away at them all day, and have small quantities of protein evenly spaced over the day, which is difficult because I hate meat. If I let my blood sugar get low, watch out. > Can anyone give me any guidance on how yeast affects blood sugar and > also if SCD (w/fruit & honey) would effect blood sugar? > Yeast is just an opportunist feasting away on what hasn't been digested and absorbed yet. The fruit and honey would effect blood sugar, so one has to use moderation and balance every meal with protein and lots of vegetables. Yes, I was just reading a post from Andy about this, in which he was guessing that the reason some kids were doing badly on SCD was that the moms were not allowing enough honey and fruit out of fear of yeast, but that the kids had adrenal problems and needed those carbs. So yes to balance at every meal... Nell

I'm not sure if I have hypoglycemia or not but do know that something is not right with my blood sugar. Eating processed carbs makes me feel like I am having a milder blood sugar reaction than sugar (which i no longer eat). I've had regular fasting blood sugar tests and test fine. ----------I have not done SCD, so can't comment on that, but my blood sugar is high, not low, so not sure if I can help you either. Anyway, have you had your hemoglobin A1c tested? It tells how you've been handling blood sugar over the past couple of months, not just one moment in time. Might be worth doing. Also, does arsenic show up on your hair test? Mine is high, and this can also affect your blood sugar. Read the parts about arsenic in the HTI book. If this is the case, then Andy says as low a carb diet as you can stand, such as Atkins, is what to do.---------Jackie Can the yeast make me have blood sugar reactions? I was wonering if SCD cleared up or put yeast under control if that would make the fruit & honey ok for me. Also, the SCD sounds too good to be true b/c of the fruit & honey. But I can't go on any longer on just meat & vegetables. I've been doing this for a few years & go through cheating periods (like right now) and figure SCD would just be better (more well rounded) then going from one extreme to the other. I know not to go overboard on the fruit & honey. But am still concerned as I become addicted (to put it mildly) to sugar & put on weight quickly (which i can't afford to do). My hair test is all low suggesting that I am malnourished (but overweight) and really feel nutrients are a big issue for me. -----------I'm the same, all low hair test, but overweight, so it didn't really make sense to me either. I asked about this, and she told me that all low on my hair test meant that I am low on stomach acid, so not absorbing nutrients, but also that my body only digested the carbs, because they are easiest to digest when you are low on stomach acid, and so you gain weight from the carbs. And you need to take enough stomach acid (Betaine HCl) with each meal, which I wasn't doing. So if you're not taking enough stomach acid, your other supplements are just a waste of money, because you're not absorbing them. I think the other factors in my weight problem has been stress causing high cortisol and my blood sugar problems. I think the high cortisol happened years ago, because now my adrenals are worn out and not producing enough, so I don't fit the standard picture of hypoadrenal, being thin. And part of my problem may be the arsenic also. Anyway, hope this helps.-----Jackie Can anyone give me any guidance on how yeast affects blood sugar and also if SCD (w/fruit & honey) would effect blood sugar?
