You have to be invited, based on your marks and on which classes you have taken (it has to be a broad spectrum of subjects for PBK, plus not all universities have chapters). The craziest thing we did was light candles to symbolize the light of knowledge. Then we blew them out and went to dinner. There was a speaker who talked about the liberal arts tradition and spreading knowledge, etc. Some people buy the PBK ‘key’ which is a little gold plated thing which they then wear on a chain or whatever. Phi Beta Kappa isn’t a secret society like the Lodge or any of those.
