I am doing a kit, it's called " On this day... " and is a sort of list

of things to do each day, like; contact a friend (!) apologise for a

wrong done, appreciate nature, and tell someone you love them. There

are flowers and birds all round it and it is destined for my hall

when it is done. I will be redecorating that when it is done as well

as DS's room. As I said in a previous reply, DH is doing one on

Seabirds at the moment. As well as his steam train, he did one that

I had made into a chart from a photo of DS when he was 2, it is a

topic of conversation as it it really beautiful.

That sounds really nice, how many hours do you estimate for it? Or

really quite impossible to estimate this sort of thing...

Sorry Ruth, for being inattentive, attention span pretty much that of

a flea at the moment...

Have you seen the lovely Lanarte kits? I keep drooling over them and

then wondering where I'd put them up and when I'll have time to do

them.

Do you like reading (this is a loaded question)?

I never set myself a time limit, I just dip in when I have 1/2 hour

or so in an evening to spare, but it's taken about 2 months so far....

No I haven't seen these, I'll look out for them - I try to go to the

Craft and Needlecraft Exhibitions when they are on at the NEC in

Birmingham, just an hours drive for us. I'll have a " nose " next

time, thanks for the tip! DH restricts himself to sewing just one

whole strand of thread per sitting, about 10 minutes worth - his

patience is amazing!

I read all the time, no particular author, just whatever catches my

eye (or DH's, he often buys me books for birthdays, Christmas

etc...) mostly I read in bed to " wind down " , I'm in the middle of

Bill Brysons " Notes from a Small Island " at the moment, DH's holiday

read from last summer - it's quite good so far. Are you going to

invite me to join the book-group you mentioned in your last message?

No secrets here! I might well be interested so ask away...

> What's that?>

Embroidery is freehand stitching on to a plain piece of material,

Cross-stitch is sewing crosses onto a piece of aida material - a

loosely woven grid of stiff threads with small holes spread evenly

throughout. Cross-stitch designs can be pre-printed on to the

material so you just sew your crosses in the same colour as the

print, right over the top. Counted cross-stitch (which I do) is

where you have a separate printed chart for your design and you have

to count the holes on your unprinted material to put the stitches in,

in the right places. Tapestry work is done on much stiffer material

and usually with wool for a thread instead of coloured cotton. I've

never tried needlepoint. Quilting is quite different, for that you

sew pieces of material onto a base piece, trapping foam in the middle

to get a 3-D effect, and then outlining your pictures with

binding/ribbon. My SIL does this extensively, she made us two flower

cushions for Christmas, has entered (and won) National competitions

and is at the moment making a quilt for my In-Laws for their 50th

Wedding Anniversary - I've never tried it though.
