Guest guest
I agree with Lupe. From my perspective, Barbara’s message generated more questions than answers on the topic. What exactly is the research question she is trying to answer through the health survey re: how people define their origin. Please provide more information so that we can understand what is happening in Michigan with the perception of Mexican migrants. Thank you. :-) Yolanda G. ez, Ph.D. Researcher Orange County Health Department Orlando, FL -----Original Message----- From: guadalupe lamas [mailto:l_lamas44@...] Sent: Tuesday, April 09, 2002 12:46 PM migrant_health Subject: Re: [ ] Term to define folks from Latino America I have been trying to ignore this message, but I feel I must reply. Just exactly what is wrong with being thought of as a " Mexican migrant " ,? and by the way, last time I checked Mexican's were still considered Hispanics. We asked the question of what they consider themselves ( " Hispanic " or " Mexican American " or " Mexican " ) on our health survey, but we are tabulating those replies now. Guest guest
Thank you Pedro. For all of us here one generation or many have an ethnic heritage that we need to honor and keep alive, that is our individual responsibility. But to label Irish, Polish, Mexican etc. American to me still divides us and promotes racism. We are all Americans, we all came to this country for what this country can offer that no other one on earth does, opportunity to live to our potential. We would not be having this discussion in England, Japan, Ireland, Brazil, Mexico. etc. Namaste, Nita Schmellick The House Next Door 804 N. Guest guest
i agree that we have heritages that we need to honor and keep alive but i disagree that we would not be having this discussion elsewhere. in england where many have come from the Caribbean or southern mexico where there is an inmigration of folks from central america, japan with the korean and the german immigrants (on many generations) in brazil this is also a continuing question. identity and migration (forced or voluntary) create conflict (interpersonal and internal) and dissonance the world over. -----Original Message-----From: Nita Schmellick [mailto:neetns@...]Sent: Tuesday, April 09, 2002 11:11 AM Subject: RE: [ ] Term to define folks from Latino Am erica Thank you Pedro. Guest guest
it's funny that we feel like resisting this conversation, but it is worldwide: consider Chinese Malaysians, the migrant streams into Germany, white South Africans, Jews anywhere but Israel, Gypsies, the different ethnic groups in the balkans and their displacement; I think it all starts when anyone of us objectively identifies him/herself. At least that's my sad opinion. Don't the French (and French Canadians) say "Vive La Difference?"
