Guest guest
Sue, If you can't get group rates for health insurance from work, you may be able to get group rates by joining a professional organization or the chamber of commerce. Where I live, in upstate New York, these are still possibilities (I'm self-employed) but in some other states you have to buy an individual policy. Good luck, [s E L Paolini] Yes I am self-employed since I was laid off from Oracle, too which is why I went the COBRA route. It was cheaper. The professional org for me www.aacm.org has a two year waiting list to get on & I am a year away from that and they have 6 month no-previous ailment issue which is no good for the COPD & graves. The Chamber of Commerce idea is interesting, I guess that's in the phone book. I'll give it a whirl. thanks . Sue
Guest guest
Sue, We were covered under COBRA a few years ago. At the time we were told we would have the option to carry it after the 18 months, but it wouldn't be at a discounted rate. Our police was going to be either $1,500 or $1,800 a month. This summer we joined the National Association for the Self employed and are carrying health insurance through them. This is their website www.nase.org There was no problem with us getting the insurance through them since at this time I am on no medication. So far we've had no problems with them, but we've only used the insurance twice for me. Not all those bills have come in yet. We were given the option of picking the plan, deductable etc. that we wanted. Just recently our mortgage company whose headquarters are in California have changed to Countrywide Financial. They now offer health, medical, life, home insurance etc. I've been checking out the benefits and was surprised at the great rates they have. I don't know if it is just for their customers or not, but it would be worth trying. Countrywide Financial Corporation ate Headquarters 4500 Park Granada Calabasas, California 91302 1- Debbie R. [s E L Paolini] Thanks Deb. Countrywide is really the cover for E-Health. www.ehealthinsurance.com. Gave them a call and because I have pre-existing they could do nothing for me. They recommended HIPAA of my local state office www.ins.state.gov.XX.us where XX is your state abbreviation. I discovered because I have a pre-existenting condtion I could be turned down. E-Health offered me a family policy that covered catastrophic and meds only for $654.00 per month & that's because I am in New York. Some states don't have that. My friend in Pennsy could get nothing so had to got the Chamber of Commerce route and start a company but had no Schedule C since he just started and his org, www.ieee.org had a 2 year waiting period before he was eligible. Called my old company and they just recommended contacting an insurnace broker unless I was in California in which a state law would cover me for longer. I did hear that www.aaa.org had something but still checking that one out. So far Jen with the $900 per month bill is about on par, so I'm still looking. I let you know what I find. Thanks for the pointers. Sue
