I was worried about going away last year as DS3 (then 2.5) was still in a cot at home but had to go into a bed on holiday, but he just took to it like a duck to water. He was so excited about being on holiday and sharing a room with DS2 (DS1 and DS2 normally share but DS1 wanted a room to himself for a treat), that I honestly don't think that he noticed it was a bed rather than a cot. He only fell out twice in a fortnight too. When we got back home, we put him into his new bed straight away with no problems. DD1 slept fine in double beds in American motels (age 2.5) (we took the bed guard) despite still being in a cot at home, Later bedtimes, sharing a room with mum and dad and an absence of toys probably all helped.
