It’s still generally a degradation to be a waiter/waitress

in the US, too. It’s just that they live on the tips they

get (minimum wage for people who get tips is about ½ of the

normal one) and have to really work for them - the tips

aren’t usually included in the price. Plus in NY or LA, the

server is likely to be an unemployed actor, so fairly good

at pretending to be cheerful :)

As for breakfast.... well, the English breakfast is a plate

full of pan-fried stuff as well and after a few days in a

hotel, I was gagging for something plain and all they had

other than eggs and tomatoes and beans was toast and those

little jam packets. But German hotels know how to put on a

good ‘continental’ breakfast spread...

Sorry this reply was a bit slow. It seemed that I was

missing a digest and lo and behold, this one appeared from

2 days ago.
