Good question, although if it is against medical advice he can refuse to prescribe, he has a responsibility to keep his patients healthy according to the best of his ability and knowledge. Chapter 11 of the book on thyroidmanager.org discusses adverse effects of ATD in some detail, and notes that generally switching drugs is tried as cross sensitivity doesn't always occur. I guess a lot comes down to judgement, if the adverse effect is itching, or skin rash, then switching is an obvious choice, if the side effect is depletion of neutrophils the doctor may be less keen to experiment with your immune system! Since it is common to need ATD immediately after RAI, surgery might also be considered. I didn't see a post saying what your problem with the drug was? There are still doctors who will try unrelated drugs as well, such as SSKI, but they are ever harder to find.
Guest guest
Hi , It's very unlikely that you would have reactions to both ATDs. It's remiss of your doc to not prescribe a low dose of PTU to see if you tolerate it, and then adjust the meds as needed. You have a right to complain. You also don't need an endo to monitor you. Most Family Practice Docs today have extensive training in endocrinology and may not be as arrogant. Take care, Elaine

Guest guest
Hey , I had that problem with Tapazole in the beginning. I had never had hives before and thought I must be allergic. Anyway, once my dose was lowered, it all went away and I " m still on the tap and doing fine. If you want to try to the PTU, you should definitely do that, but if you can wait it out, you might want to give that a try too! Good luck, kristi aaaarrrrgggghhhhh! > I've been calling my soon-to-be-ex-endo's nurse to get some PTU from > them ever since I had my reaction to Tap last week, only she doesn't > return my calls.
