Guest guest
Ok I've come into this discussion a bit late, but I thought I'd better tell you how room themes traumatised my childhood... well, adolescence, really. I was 9 1/2 when my parents where doing up my room, and they thought it'd be nice if I got to pick my own wall paper. This was in the good old days when one only changed wall paper once every 10 years at the MOST, and it was a special treat because they had just built a room for my new baby sister (sibling no 4) and they thought the rest of us deserved something too. Needless to say my sister the 16 year old picked trendy brown, my brother the 14 year old picked wallpaper covered with motor cars, and I picked... oh NO... a horrible themed paper with Colargol, a sickly little bear from television. Colargol was the Tweenies of his day, really, and 'tweenagers' didn't exist so we were all kids at 9. Needless to say my experienced mother knew that although child at 9 I wouldn't be a child forever, so she tried as gently as possible to steer me into something else, like flowers, or plain yellow. I was disgusted, as Colargol was THE thing to have, and of course I got my way, after lots of warnings that I would have to live with it for the rest of my time in their house. Imagine my horror at 10 when Colargol was completely and utterly out. Or the shame at 13 when I had the girls back for a disco for my birthday. Or the explanations at 16 when my boyfriend came back to stay. Karina Mum to Emilia (Oct 98) and Sebastian (Aug 00) (DD's room is plain white... thank God... otherwise we would have been through Teletubbies and already and on Tweenies by now...) LOL! Sorry, I know it was traumatic at the time... I don't think I had much say in choosing my room, except the color. It certainly didn't have a theme. I also can't see letting Calvin choose the Tank Engine or whatever when he gets big enough. Maybe a few pieces of stuff (or jungle stuff or whatever) but not the whole hog. But then, I am lazy...
