Guest guest
what a good idea. When I read this it just makes me really sad that we have to take such a medication that can do so much to our bodies. BUT when we need it we need it. I was on 60 mg and it took me a year to come off of it. I didn't think it was possible for one body to change so quickly.. God Bless you. I'll be praying you get this done and level out quickly. Love & Prayers, PeggyFlorida, IPF/UIP 2004"I believe that friends are quiet angels who lift us to our feet, when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly." Hi All, I am trying ( for the 4th time in 3 years) to come off of prednisone and wanted to document the experience for anyone who is interested. I began taking prednisone after my VAT on May, 8 2006 and except for a few months have been on various doses since. I credit it with saving my life but the side effects have been horrible- bone loss, shakiness, blurred vision, weight gain, rapid heart rate, prediabetic, etc., etc. Each time I have tried to come off I have ended up sick and on antibiotics. Several months ago posted about a woman who had successfully come off of prednisone by dropping 1 mg a month. I decided to try it ( with doctor's permission of course). January- I dropped from 10 to 9 mgs. Very little change except that I needed to turn up the oxygen when exercising and I was more tired each day. Sats- 97 at rest or sitting, 91 walking around the house, 80s when walking more than 5 or 6 minutes. February-8mgs. Beginning of the month I had headaches each morning ( lasted 6 days). Less shaky, eyesight better, but using more oxygen. Sats- 96 at rest and sitting, 91 walking around the house, 80s if walking more than 4-5 minutes. March-7mgs. I am no longer starving and do not want to mainline sugar! Good news-Eyesight is no longer blurry, no shaking except when I am tired, no longer puffy, and I feel like me again. This is so hard to explain other than with prednisone I feel like I am in a fog and at the 7 it feels like the fog has lifted. Bad News- the cough is back, dry eyes again, heaviness in my lungs and velcro sounds are back also. Sats- 94 when resting or sitting, can not walk more than 2-3 minutes without oxygen. After 3 minutes my sats drop dramatically, and I get pale and dizzy ( don't worry I am not practicing this move:). I am hoping that my body regulates itself in a few weeks and my symptoms decrease, but in the meantime I have upped my oil pills to 6 ( from 3) for the dry eyes, have started taking NAC again, am using oxygen more and talking less. I see the doctor for tests March 18 and again in April. R. Guest guest
Thanks for documenting this journey, . I am not on Prednisone - never have been and hope to never be - but I believe that it's good to know as much as I can about this process. Sounds like maybe you need to drop down a little more slowly to try to keep the comfort level up, maybe? In any event, good luck and God bless. Guest guest
Joyce, Isn't it strange how differently it affects all of us. I am just having "the difficulty with talking stage" at 7mgs. Guest guest
ok, quick question. To everyone: I also have been having blurry vision, dizziness, massive red eyes. How do I determine if it is the Cellcept (1000 mg twice a day) or predisone (being weaned to 5 mg once a day from 15 mg last week or something else? Also, is the extreme exhaustion part of medication or NSIP? What is the difference between NSIP and IPF? Please advise. Guest guest
, I'm sorry you are feeling so lousy....obviously we have no way of knowing for sure what your symptoms are from but I'm a bit concerned 15mg of prednisone down to 5mg in one shot is a massive drop. When I was weaning I went from 15 to 12.5 to 10 to 7.5 to 5 to 2.5 to 0 at two week intervals. Someone on the board the other day was describing going down 1mg per month. The idea is to give your body a chance to start making cortisol again because it stops when we're on high doses of prednisone. I would strongly urge you to call your doctor and let him/her know what is going on and tell him you would like to wean more slowly. Exhasution is definitely a symptom of all of these lung diseases but the double whammy of NSIP and weaning from pred is bound to make you feel like you've been run over by a freight train. NSIP and IPF are different ILD's (interstitial lung diseases). They have different characteristics in the patterns and structure of scarring in the lung and NSIP almost always has much more inflammation than IPF which is one of the reasons NSIP tends to respond to prednisone more often than IPF does. NSIP is also often associated with an underlying auto-immune disease. In my case dermatomyositis. The best news is that the long term survival rates for NSIP are higher than for IPF. Depending on what you read, average life expectancy for NSIP is from 5-15 years. My doctor at Duke told me that he's seen people with NSIP who have been 'stable for decades'. No guarantee of course but I'll take what I can get! Hope you feel better soon!
