Guest guest
We phone the host in advance (so she knows how many people to expect) and offer/get asked to provide whatever. For eg, you might say " I hate cooking, I'll bring wine " , or " I do a mean pavlova, is it alright to do that " or " what do you want me to bring " . The host can then make sure she gets a mixture of puds (ie not 6 trifles) and some wine too. Shop bought puds are perfectly acceptable too, but you tend to find if someone is going to buy something, then they're not offended if they're asked to bring wine. The first one we did everyone took a pudding AND their own drink. As you can imagine, everyone's pudding feeds about 8, so unless you were going to eat 8 helpings (possible with me, but unlikely even by my standards!) then there was loads left, which was a real shame when people had gone to so much effort to make something. Now we do either/or to try to solve this, and we still end up with plenty of leftovers. The non-drinkers/drivers still tend to bring their own drink, btw.
