I have to admit that before I joined this group I wondered if I should use an alias - exactly for the reason that if you discuss children and family-related issues at all, they will always be personal and you never know who's watching. But then it seemed that everyone else was 'real' and I didn't want to get more and more webbed into a fictious existence, it felt too much spy-movie for me. (So yes, I am Karina...). After reading this thread though I am wondering if anyone knows how long (years? months?) the archives stay on-line? (in the event that I post something I regret, or my children go onto be famous and don't want their potty-training issues to be public...). There are some things which I wouldn't post as I wouldn't want them to be dragged up by my daughter (or a bitchy 'friend') when she's older. Must be even worse than dragging out the old family album, having your mum's old posts about your bedwetting/nose-picking/whatever found ans circulated. If you want somewhere to be anonymous, www.mumsnet.com is good for that. Choose an alias and join. Most people on their have names like 'Tigermoth' or 'Bloss'. One woman has just announced she is leaving under her old name as everyone knows she is a journo for the Daily Mail (and is happy to have them know that and has also appealed for people to join an email list to be her contacts) but she feels she can't talk openly about family/personal issues because anyone can open the paper each week and see her 'ugly mug' (her words!) in there. So she's going to re-register as someone else. In fact, mumsnet is so good about anonymity that the competition winners for their recent comp to win a Green book were only announced by their pen names. -- Sue
