My sister in law Mehpare , age 36, is a stage 4 cancer patient with liver mets diagnosed in February 05. She has had 6 weeks of 5fu and radiation, after which she had surgery which included liver resection, and removal of a part of her colon, rectum, gallbladder and ovaries. She started adjuvant chemo on July 28 : FOXIL , 5fu - with Avastin to follow next round. Question: Any advice of how to cope with the nausea that has knocked her down after the first round already? She had an IV put in against dehydration, as she has hardly been able to hold food down for the past 2 days. Thanks, Leyla Welcome Leyla Sorry to hear about your sister in law. I don't know what is available in Istanbul but Compazine is one of the antinausea drugs given. Some here also take Zofran but it is rather expensive. As for food and such lighter more frequent meals sometimes help. Some of the things you or she may have used for morning sickness can work for cancer as well. Hope this helps Narice
Guest guest
Welcome to our group. I am so sorry your sister-in-law is having these problems. Do they give her any anti-nausea medication before they do her chemo? She really needs to talk to her doctor and see that they can give her something. She will need a prescription from the doctor. Other then that she should try eating dry toast. Maybe others here can give you some ideas. I am wishing her the best and saying a Prayer for her. Guest guest
There are many different kinds of meds for nausea, some are usually given as 'pre-meds'with the chemo and others to take after. Ask the doc or chemo nurses what they are giving her and ask for something more as it is obviously not doing the trick. It is sometimes a trial and error as what works for one does not for another, but keep trying. Sometimes the doc will give samples of several different anti-nausea meds to try and see what works. Also, it is very important to get enough fluids and calories. What ever food sounds or tastes good to her, she should try. Don't worry so much about the nutritional content at this point, it is more important to keep down some calories and fluids. Good luck!! Guest guest
Can you get Emend, Kytril -- both pretty good nausea meds? I also ate a lot of mac and cheese. I found starch was helpful to get the tummy under control. I used to take Compozine too. The problem with these meds is that you really get tired. Good luck.
