Guest guest
I went to boarding school from 15 -18 and hated it, but had no choice due to some very sad family circumstances. One of my classmates tracked me down by seeing a photo of me belonging to a lad I was friends with for a couple of years - at a distance, me met on a SU working party who were painting a homeless peoples' shelter one summer and were at different universities. He knew my married name and phone number from when we were at the christmas card only stage! She phoned out of the blue and asked if I was interested in going back to Old Girls day last Nov. I had some very very mixed feelings about it - worried that I didn't need some very unhappy memories stirred up, but my sister was keen to go, so I went. I was completely amazed to discover that some of the people who I thought were most 'integrated' into the system and happy, prefects even! had hated it too and we all wondered how so many of us had turned out as sane and happy as we had. It was good to talk about how awful things were, and to laugh at some of it whilst acknowleging how horrible some of the other bits were. It was also good to see how much had changed both in terms of the physical environment and also in the attitudes of staff to pupils and pupils to staff and life. I'd love to catch up with some of the people at the first secondary school I went to though... so I might be tempted by the website yet! Though perhaps an extra couple of hours a day would be useful - DK's break up on Thurs which is toooooo sooooon!!!!! Liz Goudie
