Guest guest
treating adrenals; like many i have adrenal problems and know AI/this forum and many other experts suggest treating adrenals first and NOT doing anything to treat/support thyroid as it can stress/mess up adrenals (I believe this is what can happen) Thus my understanding would be that when supporting adrenals, supps like tyrosine, selenium and iodine should be avoided as they support thyroid. I had tried tyrosine and it made me agitated and created some head problems. same with dl-phenylalanine it created immediate head/anxiety problems which lasted all night (i do not know if the latter of these problems were related to thyroid or just my system could not handle (AI says the latter dl-phenylalanine) can do this I believe QUESTION any other supplements/foods that are supportive of thyroid? and therefore should be avoided when treating adrenals? what about kelp, one thyroid book i am reading which seems really informative (The Thyroid Diet by Shomon) says kelp can be bad (i think she said it can create thyroid problems and i was taking it before AI), any thoughts? She meant 500mg of tyrosine, plus *some* selenium plus *some* iodine. You would never want to take 500mg of selenium or iodine. Selenium can become toxic at levels not too far from those recommended for supplementation, and I have a book that says that amount is 1000mcg or 1mg. In AI, Andy recommends 50-300mcg of selenium, and I was recommended to take between 200-400mcg/day by one doctor. Andy doesn't give a recommendation (amount) for iodine in AI, and suggestions for this might vary quite a bit, as states below. You can do an iodine loading test. I know VRP offers it now, and there are probably other places.-----------Jackie > > (Sorry for butting in !) > > (perhaps > in lieu of Armour?). It is important to treat adrenals *first*, or *before* you start treating thyroid. You don't have to totally *heal* your adrenals before starting thyroid treatment. And I did find this out for myself, because I had a doctor give me Armour to try, without any adrenal support. And yes it was hard on my adrenals and made me worse.---------Jackie Thus my understanding would be that when supporting adrenals, supps like tyrosine, selenium and iodine should be avoided as they support thyroid. ------------No, you should be able to support your adrenals and thyroid at the same time. And I don't know if these thyroid supporting supplements would be or cause the same effect as actually taking Armour or thyroid hormone. But as long as you're taking adrenal support, there shouldn't be a problem with taking these supplements to support your thyroid.-----------Jackie I had tried tyrosine and it made me agitated and created some head problems. -----------I think I only tried tyrosine once, and it made my head feel funny also, so I haven't tried taking it since. I take selenium and iodine, and haven't noticed any problems from them.-----------Jackie same with dl-phenylalanine it created immediate head/anxiety problems which lasted all night (i do not know if the latter of these problems were related to thyroid or just my system could not handle (AI says the latter dl-phenylalanine) can do this I believe QUESTION any other supplements/foods that are supportive of thyroid? and therefore should be avoided when treating adrenals? ------------Some say coconut oil is good for your thyroid, but like I said above, you don't have to avoid them because of adrenals. Just treat both.---------Jackie what about kelp, one thyroid book i am reading which seems really informative (The Thyroid Diet by Shomon) says kelp can be bad (i think she said it can create thyroid problems and i was taking it before AI), any thoughts? ------------I think I read that too little and too much iodine isn't good for your thyroid, so maybe the kelp has too much iodine in it, or at least for some people? Or since it comes from the ocean, did she think it was contaminated?--------Jackie Thanks all, I have been off the site for a few weeks >
