Your explanation of a TIA was perfect. I can't add anything of substance. It's a temporary disruption to the blood flow somewhere in the brain. The cause cannot be seen on the typical diagnostic tests and the effects generally last less than 24 hours. There could be different causes, a tiny blood clot that creates a temporary blockage before breaking loose, a spasm in a blood vessel that blocks blood flow for a short period of time, things like that.

My grandmother had TIA's for 20 years. 3 or 4 times a year always lasted about 12 or 14 hours and then she was good as new. She lived to be 83 and never did have the stroke that the doctors said she was at high risk for. You just never know!

I am in and out and I've been out. A TIA is a transient ischemic attack. I have seen it referred to as a pre-stroke, a small stroke and other manner of stuff. Mostly it is a piece of something that is there and then gone that disrupts blood flow to the brain. Literally, a brain blip (or a brain fart if you will). It does not show up on a CT scan, being there then gone. If the effects last a day or less it is considered only a TIA. If the effects last longer than that, clinically it is considered a stroke. Some of our more learned, professionals on the board may want to add to this? I don't mean to make light of myself because it can be serious but I tend not to take myself too seriously. I just hope not to end up a drooling mess with knarly old arthritic hands and no teeth. Who happens not to be able to breathe well. On the other hand I got a haircut and 5 new pairs of shoes yesterday!Life is good on this end. S,

that is all it was. The doctor let me come home to rest instead of making me stay overnight. They don't fool around if they even suspect stroke. But all is well.
