Part of that depends when you took your A levels. I took mine in 1979 and in

those days D's at least were certainly considered acceptable - E's obviously

less so. I got into to read Physics (Honours) with a B and two D's at Leeds

- a " red brick " university of a very good reputation.

Again in the late 70's/ early 80's when I did my degree, if you were an

honours course and passed the first two years, but failed on the exams in the

final year (but attended) the course - you got an Ordinary degree. The

grades were the usual First, 2(i), 2(ii), 3rd, Pass and then an Ordinary.

Interestingly, my profession (Patent Attorney) now expects entrants to have a

first or 2(i) if they are new graduates, whereas I " only " have a 2(ii) which

was more that acceptable 10 to 15 years ago. Don't know what that says about

the standards of degrees these days - but that's another subject :-)
