Guest guest
I was taking a low dose of DHEA without testing (5 mg. every couple of days?), just based on the fact I'm nearing 50. I also read it supports the adrenals. l stopped it, along with possible stimulants like ginseng, when I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid, but would love to get info on whether It helps or hurts. Guest guest
When I was talking to people before I received decent medical care and gleaned some info on my own everyone kept saying take dhea. I didn't till I was tested. Mine was at 80%. Dhea is one of those things that really make you feel badly over medicated. You seem to need it, but better you test first. One of my main issues was an in-born error for almost no folic acid plus my Hashi, low ferritin and electrolyte imbalance. It threw everything off. DHEA Maybe Tish or someone else can answer this question. Neither my endo nor pcp believe in adrenal fatigue. However. I was taking 25mg of DHEA on my own before asking for it to be tested along with the thyroid labs. The result was 23 on a range of 39 to 183. So I increased the DHEA to 50mg. The next lab came back 38. Still low. So I am now on 75mg. I thought I was starting to have more energy, but I had to take Mom to the doctor on Wednesday and get medication afterwards and yesterday I took a 2 hour nap and was still tired. Today I am feeling weak again and have to take Mom to another doctor today. I digress. My question is, will I need to keep taking DHEA or drop it at some point? I have read of some doctors recommending it highly for anyone over the age of 50. So maybe it's a good thing to keep doing? I take 50 mg. once a day. It's one of those supplements that's limited to sale by health professionals only, but I order mine from www.IllnessIsOptional.com, or . It's a US site run by a pharmacist, and they give a 20% discount from what my doctor charges me. My doctor said I should take it because of the results of my AAL Reference Laboratories 24 hour urine panel (see http://www.antibodyassay.com/index.htm). My doctor thinks that is the best test for measuring hormones and their metabolites. My DHEA was 0.1 (expected range 0.2-0.9), and all my other measures of adrenal and female hormone function were below range or at the very low end of range. My symptoms at the time of the test were low stamina, palpitations, vaginal atrophy, and fatigue. Lynn

Adrenal function was very low. Doctor did put us (me and my daughters) on dhea cream. My oldest took it (he put it in her name only) when she moved out. Wanted to get something comparable for myself and especially my other daughter. We no longer have that doctor because we moved 2000 miles away. So anyway... at least wanted to get my daughter something if not myself. She had the low adrenal function, low stamina, palpitations and fatigue anyway... I don't know about the vaginal atrophy... honestly, I've never heard of that. ? Thanks! ~Alyce

We did do the 24 hour urine panel. That was fun... yes? lol... good grief. The three of us toting our bright orange jugs o' collected urine to the lab were quite a sight I'm sure. ~Alyce
