Guest guest
Hi Holly, Not sure of the effect any of this has on your thyroid, but I can tell you progesterone is high in the 2 weeks following ovulation (and leading up to your period). However, if you are not pregnant, your progesterone levels crash and estrogen takes over toward the end of your cycle (last day or so). Progesterone is the hormone that makes you feel whacky. It's the one your body pumps out in droves when you are pregnant and it's the one that gives you all those lovely early pregnancy signs (sore breasts, mood swings, morning sickness, etc.). It's also what makes you feel the classic " PMS " symptoms. I also know progesterone raises your body temperature. As a tool for conception, some women chart their basal body temperatures. After ovulation there is a dramatic rise in basal body temperature because of progesterone (mine would go from 96.7 to 97.9 or so). Hope that helped a little. Guest guest
Holly, I don't know if I can help you at all, but I sure feel for you! And I have to say, I'm glad to hear someone else who has noticed this tie between the thyroid and female stuff. I have had a hell of a time with all the fluctuations, going hyper/hypo/hyper and so on. I developed fibro cystic breast condition from it, although no doctor will admit that. All I can tell you is that I've noticed major changes in a sort of opposite way....when my tapazole dose was changed, I'd have a corresponding female response. Whether that was these breast cysts, major PMS or a sudden period or heavy period or light. I would guess that as your body adjusts to being without the pill, everything will calm down. that's just a guess but I know that once my body adjusts to the change in meds, everything settles down. I still have the breast lumps, and they swell before each period and a little before ovulation and then they go back down to where I can hardly tell they're there. I guess this might be too much info! Anyway, I would be a little worried about changing any meds now because that might throw your body into an even bigger tailspin? Just my gut feeling. Debbie had a good suggestion...try some calming teas and try to take it easy for a few days...see if things calm down as your body adjusts to the change. Good Luck! Kristi BC Update This has been my first month in 12 years not on birth control pills. I'm due to start my period any day now, and I've been so HYPER since Saturday I'm ready to pull my hair out. My heart rate is up to around 90 (it's normally around 60), I've slept MAYBE 2 hours each of the last two nights. I'm shaking all over. This may not be related to going off the birth control, but I remember several people on this list mentioning that they feel hyper before their periods, so that's my first thought. I never had any fluctuations in how I felt throughout the month when I was on the pill. Now I'm scared to death that I've set myself back about a year in my recovery -- just when I was convinced that I was ready for another drop in my dosage. Will this go away? Will being this hyper have a lasting impact on my treatment schedule? Should I increase my ATD? I'm so disappointed. I hate to think I've messed with something I shouldn't have. Especially after all the fighting I had to go through when I made the decision to go off the pill. Elaine, which hormone is higher right before your period -- estrogen or progestin? If I ever had a question as to the effect of hormones on the thyroid, I don't now. This is really freaking me out. Last week I was sure I'd gone hypo again, and now this... Somewhat panicked.... Holly Dx. 8/2001; 5 mg. MMI (and was hoping I was ready to go down to 2.5 after my endo appt. on the 20th)
