I know my mum spent the best part of one Christmas in the chest ward being piped full of Warfarin, till I think day 4 when they realised it wasn't an embolism, and the rat poison wouldn't help her. Is it just something they guess at through symptoms, or can they spot the embolism in some way? Embarassed to say I've forgotten the final diagnosis on that occaison (it wasn't the only Christmas spent in and around hospitals), but it all resulted from her Lupus attacking the lungs. Guest guest
Red, I believe it would help everyone if you would explain why PTU could be the cause. I searched the Atomic Women's site and found nothing there. Before anyone gets up in the morning and reads this and quits their PTU, I did look up the basics. http://www.ehendrick.org/healthy/00062720.html How long was this woman on PTU and was she seeing a doctor on schedule to be watched for any odd complications, like the rest of us do ? What was her maintenance dose ? Did she not have any symptoms ? What literature supports this ? -Pam L -
Guest guest
How long was long-term use? What were her symptoms? Holly Dx. 8/2001; 5 mg. MMI Long term ATD use -- rare danger Hi, everybody. There is a lady, whom I believe belongs to this group as well as AtomicWomen, who has just been released from the hospital. Last week, she developed embolisms in both lungs. Her doctor believes that this is a result of long term PTU use. She will elaborate on this if she chooses, but I feel that it is the responsible thing for me to do to report this, as we have often discussed the long term use of ATDs to avoid RAI. Elaine and I have both searched the literature on this, and she has found some references which may support the doctor's assessment of the situation. I am by no means suggesting that anyone on long term ATDs should be fearful of what is likely to be an extremely rare occurrance, but that anyone on this regime be very observant of physical symptoms and address them in a timely manner, because these drugs are potent.
