I passed Kieran a pair of socks yesterday. " That says Cool Dud " he

said. I gave him the correct pronunciation of " Cool Dude " . " Oh yes,

" he said " its a split diagraph " ????$£?!

I can't find this anywhere in my dictionary. What is it called when

the vowel is separated from the e by another letter but the e still

makes the vowel sound change. I think Kieran might have misheard the

term because he finds it difficult to follow verbal teaching but I

realised I don't know what its called either !!

Digraph, I think - meaning two letters. He's picked up the rule that u as

in bun, ue as in blue etc, so the digraph is ue, and the followed it with

(eg) dud, dude, where the digraph is split. QED!

Thanks, I asked his teacher when I went to pick him up. Not bad for a

child who didn't form his first sentence until he was nearly 4 and who

has extreme difficulty in listening to " the literacy hour " It was

Magic E when I was at school :))
