Guest guest
My original wedding ring broke and I had to get a new one. We got married young (ie poor) - dh bought me a quarter carat diamond solitaire in the US. When we tried to get a 14-carat gold wedding ring in Edinburgh, they were so expensive (you could only get them in the really swanky jewellers). We decided to buy a cheap ring (13 quid from Total Crap Ratners) for the wedding and replace it with a 14-carat as soon as we got to the US (we were emigrating immediately after the honeymoon). Well, we needed money for household essentials, so we didn't worry about the 9ct gold wearing away my 'expensive' engagement ring. The ring lasted 10 years. Now I have a $70 14-carat gold band - no expense spared, eh? It seems that most (well-orf) Americans upgrade their engagement rings at various anniversaries. While a 1/4 carat is fine at age 21, it is unusual 15 years on. Most of my friends have enormous (and gawdy) engagement rings. I just can't imagine spending my dosh on that, and I'm rather proud of my little diamond. Back to the topic, I wear both rings all the time. None of my pregnancies have been a problem. Joyce ------------------------------------------ I take my rings off for everything, even typing. I must confess to not having the same rings as I had when I got married, as I have got fatter, and fashions do change in almost 34 yrs (anniversary coming up on the 4th July!). My present ring on my left hand is a very pretty white gold and diamond affair we got in Israel last autumn, I took a jpg of it to show to someone over the net.. http://www.ruthiepearlman.com/pictures/ring.jpg and on my right hand I wear a ring that used to be yellow gold and has little diamonds at the top, but I had it dipped in " white gold " (really rhodium and costs next to nothing to do, or nothing at all, my neighbour works in Hatton Garden). I am very into white gold atm, or two tone white and yellow. Israel has the most beautiful and original jewellery and I am sorely tempted whenever I go there! Very similar story here Joyce. We could barely afford to eat when we got married and we bought real cheapie rings. We keep telling ourselves we'll change then but have never got round to it. My wedding ring came off during pregnancy and I had a period of rebellion where DH stopped wearing his ring so I stopped wearing mine and then I found I couldn't get it on anyway! It's somewhere at home in the UK now but 18mo ago he bought me a diamond solitaire that I haven't taken off since I put it on that Xmas Day. Well, not quite true. I couldn't take it off for the first 17mos but last month after losing weight finally found I could so it's been on and off a lot this month, for novelty value only!! I'm not big on jewellery at all but would love a nice pair of diamond earrings and that would be my lot. Other than that, I'm quite happy to wear something from Accessorize! -- Sue Melbourne, Australia

This is common practice in Italy. And some jewellers can engrave from your handwriting. We did this ..... we really splashed out on our wedding rings (we figured it's for life and wanted something attractive). Anyway - we wanted my name in English and DH's name in Greek but they didn't have the same fonts, so they suggested we write down our own names and date and they copied our handwriting onto the rings. Really cool!!!! I took my wedding ring off for the last months of pregnancy because I didn't want to risk having it cut off. I was really annoyed and every day after giving birth I would try to put it back on - took a few weeks! Janet Athens

Guest guest
I could have sworn we had our names engraved on our rings, but have just checked and it's just the date! Will have to get that rectified... Thanks for all the lovely ideas... Made me think of those rings from Past Times with lovely mottos written in them from days gone by.. Now I can't get it back on.... I took my ring off on my wedding day with DH there so that I wouldn't feel superstitious about it. Someone said she'd been wearing the rings since they went on 20, 19 and 16 years ago, they weren't wedding rings were they?! A school friend lost twin boys at 20 weeks and her husband gave her a lovely intertwined signet ring to wear to remember them by, two strands of gold.. I thought it was a lovely idea but others from school thought it callous... Caro
