The sample was quite large for this type of study, but exactly what factors they controlled for (apart from smoking) or the confidence values - I couldn't tell you. Vivette Glover seemed to think it was a fairly reliable study. Vivette Glover is a well respected researcher on these type of issues - I have been to several study days where she has spoken, and she came to the JR at Oxford once to speak at an Open Evening that I organised on behalf of SSNAP (the charity that supports SCBU there). On that occasion she spoke about the impact of things like stress and pain on unborn, and newborn (particularly prem) babies. As most of us were parents of babies who'd been in SCBU - it was a very interesting talk. She is based at Queen Charlotte's hospital in London. If you want I could try and find the ref. for you.
