Here in Oz - children born in December (the school year runs from Feb to

December) often start at school the next year - so that they are old for

their year rather than very young. DS2 has a December birthday and will be 7

this year, but a few kids in his class will be 8 at around the same time. It

is thought of as quite acceptable to do this - and certainly helps some

children. For my own part - DS2 has coped this last year very well with

being a youngster in his class.

How they will approach it in the UK - I don't know.
