Guest guest
Hello everyone, I went to see the surgeon today for my 3 week follow up appointment and he told me that there was definitely no cancer in my thyroid. Everything else, he thought, was progressing nicely and I can start weaning off the calcium and Vitamin D with a schedule for monitoring my calcium and parathyroid hormone levels. My thyroid weighed 88.31 grams. He was not happy when I told him that I was 9 days pregnant when he did the surgery. His suggestion was that I consider terminating the pregnancy. He did also say that " he is not the expert " and that I should talk to my ob/gyn. I asked him if he had other patients that had been pregnant during surgery and what did they do? He said that they had terminated their pregnancies. So, now I am frantic to speak to my OB/GYN -- which I will try and do as soon as I can get past his receptionist. . . wish me luck! Guest guest
Carmel, I agree with here...there's no reason to panic! There's a very good chance the baby wasn't even affected, if he/she wasn't implanted yet. Also, I'm wondering about this doctor. How many women has he operated on who were pregnant? Isn't he doing pregnancy tests as a pre-op? Without going into a long explanation, I've had two " difficult " pregnancies and now have two beautifully healthy children. I really doubt an OB would suggest termination under your circumstances. I'll be praying for you and your baby. And remember, these little fetuses are more resilient than we think! Much luck! At least he had the humility to admit that he's not the expert. That other women terminated their pregnancies is irrelevant; after dealing with the Graves standard of care system, it's quite likely that these women didn't do further research or had other concerns. I hate to bring this up but let's take a less than optimistic look at this for a minute. What are the drs. conjecturing could go wrong? What are steps you could take to reduce the problems - e.g. having higher risk prenatal care, having a good post-partum team available, etc.? Somewhere between the " nothing bad is likely to happen " and the worst case scenarios there is still middle ground and you have to investigate what that is before taking the sort of action your surgeon recommends, if you even would, which I don't think you want to do and I don't blame you because I wouldn't either. Hope your recovery from the surgery is speedy and complete, Take care, Fay ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month!
