I hope and pray this has the desired effect and that he will soon be on the road to recovery Narice Supposedly it goes from the portal vein in the liver to a heart vein, so the blood does not pass through the liver or get backed up there, which is what is causing the ascites. I'm calling dr. tomorrow b/c we never heard anything about manual pumping....??? I know there are many shunts, with many purposes...
