Guest guest
> Tapestries, needlepoint, embroidery and cross stitch have now all come up in > this thread. > What's the difference between them all? My Mum does some sort of sewing > picture things and I don't know which it is! And a friend does quilting. > What's that? Tapestry :- usually canvas with picture painted on it. The colours are covered with the appropriate coloured wool using tent stitch (a single diagonal stitch using holes in canvas e.g half of cross-stitch) Finer stitches in the tram lines are used for facial detail etc. embroidery :- usually stitched on plain fabric (i.e. no holes) a multitude of different threads and stitches can be used e.g Stem, Chain, French Knots, Straight Cross-stitch is usually done on a light canvas (can't remember special name??) Similar to tapestry in that the colours make the pattern, although it is usually " counted " as opposed to done over a printed pattern. The stitch is made with 2 opposite diagonal stitches with one over the other using the holes in the canvas Quilting is embroidery done using layers of fabric with a kind of stuffing sandwiched in-between. The effect is a raised appearance between stitches. I think needlepoint is a general term - but I could be wrong. Please add to my descriptions if I have left something out or mislead in anyway
