My parents are divorced and I have lived with my Mum and her 2nd husband (Alec) since I was 8yrs. I insisted that the wedding should be done properly with my Dad giving me away and sitting next to me at the top table. I asked Alec to be master of ceremonies and he sat on the top table too but at the far end. Obviously my Dad would make a speech and Alec wanted to too and DH's father pitched in and made one aswell. Well my Dad, who normally joked and made lude comments, made the most wonderful speech, even thanking Alec for looking after me. His words were from the heart and he had no paper to read from. It was truly moving for all. FIL speech must have been OK but I can't really remember it. BUT Alec's was atrocious. It was more a life story of what he and my Mother had done in the years I had lived with him. The worst bit was a racist comment about my teacher training in inner city Leicester. (we had a black friend at the wedding too) I was mortified. Obviously I could never tell either my Mum nor Alec what I thought, but lots of my friends did comment to me afterwards. If only he knew that this made my Dad's speech shine all the more in the hearts of everyone. (fond memories as my Dad passed away 3 1/2 months after our wedding)
