Guest guest
Hi Sharon: Sorry I screwed up on the previous message and hit enter before I posted anything. Sorry to hear about your disease. I have had IPF dx since 2003 and was being monitored by Toronto Transplant Team since 2005 and was being considered for a transplant My lung capacity is now 34% and I have to use Oxygen 24/7. I was re-evaluated in Dec 2008 and the doctors have decided that due to kidney and heart issues I will die on the table hence the transplant is not going to happen. I went through a major life crises in Jan 2009 since I found out about the decision. However since I have tremendous faith in God and I have a very supportive wife, and a twelve year old Pomeranion Dog who all want me to live for as long and as best as I can I decided to join the Rehab Program.I had my struggles at first but soon realized that all the folks in the program had similar issues and were all struggling with their abilities. The Presenters of the program tailored each individuals exercise and swimming and equipment use based on their level of strength. The main points were as follows. Pace yourself. Keep stretching your time on the equipment as you get better at it. Also walk a little further in the next session. We live in a very cold climate so we were shown how to cover our nose and mouth with a scarf or muffler so the cold air does not trigger the coughing. This I was very skeptical about but once I got a hang of the technique it really helped. They also taught to breathe deeply and what they called Pursed Lip breathing. This technique involves breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth until you get over your anxiety attack and your breathing gets under control. This technique helped me a lot since I used to get in long coughing spells and I used to get out of breath and I used to panic which used to make the situation even worse. They also taught us to avoid the triggers of the disease and to recognize the limitations and taught us to slow down and take deep breaths as you enter your trigger. Like showering with extremely hot water. Making your bed in the morning. Putting your clothes on. Vacuuming and other household chores. The one thing they stressed was one needs to stay active and exercise as well oiled muscles need less oxygen to move then muscles that are not being used regularly. I also have started doing yoga every morning. I do not do anything fancy. I deep breathe in and out through the lungs for about 3 to 5 minutes. When you start this is the most difficult but as you keep doing it and extending your time it becomes easier. The next breathing exercise is to inhale though your nose and exhale through your mouth. As you exhale you have to pull your stomach in. So as you exhale you are forcing the air through your mouth to be pumped out by contraction of your abdomen. This over time I have started doing for about 15 to 20 minutes. This exercise stretches your diaphram and the lung capacity and helps you to breathe easier. The third exercise is to breathe through your each nose trill. The way this exercise works is you breathe in from your left nose trill and then cover it up with your thumb and breathe out through your right nose trill. Then breathe in through your right nose trill and cover it up with your third and fourth finger and breathe out through your left nose trill. Again you start slowly and gradually increase your time. I do these techniques every day by watching a DVD by an Indian Yoga teacher known as Baba Ramdev that you can purchase on their website. The bottom line is you need to want to do this if you are going to be successful. I know this is a lot of information but it has taken me over three months and a will to live that makes it possible. Please do not hesitate to ask if you need any clarification. Also do you have family support and what part of the country are you from. Good luck with your journey Pravin > > > > > > Hi I have just joined. I have IPF and am on 2 litres oxygen 24/7.
