To work there you have to be 'of a certain age' - over 55 (at least). They still close for an hour at lunch time and Thursday afternoons. The only time I have been served with any speed was when DD2 was a baby and I wanted an old fashioned 'mop' cap type sun hat, if I want any fabric for fancy dress etc I send in my mum and even she finds it difficult to get any form of 'rapid' service unless she goes in with a walking stick. I honestly don't think its changed since the occupation. You still encounter old Jersey people here speaking 'Jersiaise' and if I ever manage to buy something from there without them looking at me as though I'm something the cat's dragged in I will know a) I've finally been accepted and I'm decrepit and started wearing bri-nylon overalls! > > Caroline Caroline, interesting, and it's half past one and I don't know why I'm still up either ) Yeshaya has gone across the road to sleep over with his mate Zevi; they are watching a DVD on my laptop computer. *SIGH*. You were referring to " s " I think s purports to sell normal clothes for ladies, albeit rather blue rinse type ladies rather than trendy ones, but is mostly famed for its lingerée, underwear, and tights. It seems you have to have a blue rinse to be able to work there too cos all the serving ladies have one! When I go and buy my opaque Gyspy knee hi socks (the only reason I go there), they insist on writing out a receipt by hand which takes so long, then they hand it to a cashier (another blue rinse) to get the change..all to keep all the blue rinses occupied I think; mostly at least half a dozen standing around idle! It's certainly an unusual shop, especially in Golders Green Road where all the shops are changing hands at a rate of knots; s seems to be in a time warp, unchanging since my girlhood.
