The last few are less good, and have significant similarities. My

favourites? Not that sort of girl (which I adore), Camomile Lawn,

Harnessing Peacocks (in many ways funnier than most), The Vacillations of

Poppy Carew (um - also funnier than most!). Second Fiddle is rather

low-key; clever but a bit too blank an ending for me. A sensible life I

very much enjoyed, but very clear parallels to Camomile Lawn and not as good

IMO. An imaginative experience I wasn't keen on; some allusions to some

very deep issues which always remained shadowy side-issues (a bit like the

secret service and smuggling stuff in jumping the queue - maybe some people

like this sideways peek at complexity). A dubious legacy is brilliant in

parts, irritating in parts. A bit self-indulgent, with an irritating

central character, and a bit hastily edited perhaps. A similar device of

two virtually indistinguishable bright young couples that she used in A

sensible life.

Gosh, I sound very faint-praise ish here - I re-read them all except an

imaginative experience.

Anneliese who reads less and less the older Tim gets!
