Can someone direct me to where I could find the laws for the State of Texas that

pertain to underage or age of a person that should ride on a Fire Truck. Or

direct me to the yahoo group that could help.

Thank you in advance.

When you say " age of a person that should ride on a Fire Truck " are you talking

about an observer, such as an Explorer Scout, or as a firefighter?  And are you

talking about during emergency responses or simply on a demonstration ride?

There is not a law that I am aware of however, each dept. Should way

the decision very heavely these days due to liability, I started in

the fire service at 14. 15 years later as an officer there is noway I

would let anyone under the age of 18 on my truck way too much to lose

in my opinion, a minor can participate in training but no fire ground

activities whatsoever! You may want to check the houstonfd yahoo

group or bexarcountyfire group they may have some more insite!

It may well be in Texas.

Some States historically the ones with large numbers of volunteer fire

departments do have specific laws allowing VFD's to be exempted from some

Child Labor Laws or limiting their liability etc. Pennsylvania and New Jersey

are both in that category.

The real issue in New jersey for a long time on the EMS side was that at

one time one could be an EMT-A at the age of 16 however, the Child Labor Laws

stated that no one under 18 could work with any high pressure gas system

specifically not allowing bottle to be changed and the like. Bit of a

problem to ride an ambulance with the obvious need to be able to change out an

O2

bottle etc. same on the fire side with allowing a Junior FF to change an

SCBA bottle which was one of the things I did routinely as a Junior. Of

course I rode the Box too since I was one of those 16 year old EMT-A's.

The funny thing is that back in a time when common sense at least seemed to

be more common than it is today I was not allowed to ride on the back step

of any apparatus but I could jump up into the hose bed and ride there! It

was safer NOT!

The Boy Scouts through their Explorers program allows Members as young as

14.
