This is entirely the wrong approach... there are so many other languages

if you promote one language over the other, you are discriminating

against the others... what need to happen is to require everybody that

enters the country to speak the our language... that is what happens in

the other countries in the world!!!

If you mean that, in the other countries in the world they usually learn to

speak English ( " the our language " ), you're right. We're about the only

civilised country that doesn't heavily promote bilingual education. I've

travelled much of the world and have yet to find a country where it was

difficult to find English speakers.

While I DO agree with you, Les, the simple fact now is that in 2008 it was

estimated that almost 40% of the Texas population is now Hispanic. That may be

reflected even higher when the official census comes out for this year. I am a

firm believer that if you are going to live in our country and be eligible for

our benefits of living in our country, you should be a citizen. And to be a

citizen I feel you should be able to speak and read English, since it is our

national language. However, since we know that is NOT the case, we have to

target our emergency care to the most highly represented populations in our

diverse society because we ARE going to have to care for them. And in Texas the

two highest populations by a widespread margin over the others is White

Non-Hispanic and Hispanic.

I personally do not speak Spanish and have found it a very hindering thing. And

at my age, attempting to learn it has been very difficult. But I do intend to

try.

Les the problem here is that EMS can't solve it's own issues for the most

part we sure as hell ain't gonna fix immigration BUT in the mean time we are

gonna deal with a slew of non English Speakers and for the most part in

Texas they will speak Spanish so I think this is " stepping up to the plate "

as it were.

Further as one on this list that has gone to some real s**t holes in the

" third world " and yet I generally find passable English spoken by seemingly

everyone there it is a HUGE societal issue that we a people do not make our

kids learn other languages for the most part. As was stated in another post

most non English countries teach their Mother Lounge as we teach English

as well as English and then a third language.

While I don't like most of Obama's stuff he made some sense the other day

while talking about the need for reform in US education, not that I expect

our government to fix that nor healthcare!

I'm just wondering when it is that we started basing patient care off

of what patients SHOULD do.

My frequent fliers should manage their diabetes.

The gentleman who had an MI should've eaten better and gotten more

exercise.

That firefighter should have worn his SCBA.

That guy should have stayed away from the crack. He should've stayed

away the second, third, and seventeenth times, too.

That child should have stayed out of traffic.

That guy should have kept it in his pants so his wife didn't put a

knife in his gut.

But I still educate myself about diabetes and heart attacks and smoke

inhalation and drug overdoses and MVPeds and multisystem trauma.

And yes, I tried to make this email a little lighthearted, but I think

that my main point stands. We aren't here to judge the actions of any

of our patients. We're here to help them as best as we can. If that

means we have to go the extra mile, that shouldn't be a bitterness

toward them, but a point of pride for us.

But you can't make anyone ascribe to your belifs. I can't see why some

EMT's only get the minimum CE when I get about 30 a year.
