Guest guest
, you are 100% correct. Loss of Dyess would nail the lid on the coffin for Abilene. Abilene is an awkward city in size and location. Its economy is based on the military and the colleges and little else. It's an old town with old ways and old thinking. Fire EMS may be the only practical way to provide the service if privates cannot make it economically. But will things improve? I wouldn't bet the ranch on it. Guest guest
Rob you are very much wring on that. The IAFF does not represent the vast majority of Firefighters and even when you look at most IAFF members the leaning is well right. The IAFF as a union is as left as one can get but again they don't represent bit speak for the bulk of the Fire Service. Sadly, I can see why most outside of the Fire Service think otherwise. Guest guest
Hey Wayne, I'm sure AFD would do an outstanding job. I have worked with several of AFD's folks through out the years. My response was to the quotes from the citizens committee in regards to the service paying for itself. Don't see that happening... See ya, F. E. Guest guest
That's true but the IAFF International was the first and largest AFL-CIO affiliate to endorse Kerry in 2000. The IAFF and IAFC (chief's union) have been pushing to take over EMS since the mid to late 1980s. They have made no secret of it and no secret that it is, as Joe Biden would say, about a three letter word, J-O-B-S. As fires decrease and HazMat hasn't panned out to be the job preserver that everyone thought it might be, the fire service lobby has turned more and more to EMS to preserve jobs. All the crapola about it being cheaper, faster, better, is a cover for preserving FF jobs. If a private company can't make a profit doing EMS in a given city, the FD will not be able to. Not only does it cost more for a FD to run EMS, they don't have the additional revenue from non emergency work that most privates get when they do 9-1-1 work. Often the 9-1-1 work is a loss leader to get their foot in the door for the lucrative non emergency work. And I use lucrative in the ironic sense. Unless there is going to be a huge increase in the quality of care and from what Gene says that's not likely, why have a more expensive service that still delivers lousy care?
