Hi calvin, I also live in the LA area. I'm just beginning also.

Maybe we can help each other as we both start our journeys.

Wow, this would be a long shot, but years ago I worked with an actor

with your name. Could it be?? In any case, I live in LA and would

be happy to help. I had my left hip resurfaced in Belgium by Dr. De

Smet in 2002. Donna(Kei Benz)

Calvin,

I live in the L.A. area and have had a resurfacing of my left hip.

My right is starting to go out on me too, so I might be looking at a

resurfacing of my right in the near future.

If you are looking for resurfacing, there is only one place in L.A.

and this at the Joint Replacement Institute near downtown. You can

see posts about them here and there is a website.

Calvin and ,

Welcome to the group gentlemen. You're to be congratulated on

what you've discovered on your own, namely that hip resurfacing

is a significantly superior option to total hip replacement (THR).

(Now if only US insurance providers would unanimously embrace the

obvious.) Please don't feel inhibited in asking anything of us.

You probably don't yet fully comprehend the journey before you.

It's nothing to be feared, in fact just the opposite, it's

something to be embraced as it's the road to freedom from pain

and the means to recapture a fully active lifestyle. You have great

resources, especially in this group and with your local access to JRI

at the LA Orthopedic Hospital, one of the leading resurfacing centers

in the planet. Let me quickly add that there are several great

resurfacing surgeons across the globe and we surfacehippies are

understandably extremely loyal, supportive, and very defensive of our

individual OS. After all, they've given us back our active,

pain-free life. You'll get lots of advice here but you need to

perform your own due diligence on surgeon selection. Unless

you're fortunate enough to have the means to pay for it out of

pocket, an unfortunate hurdle in this process is insurance coverage.

But let the office of your eventually surgeon of choice initiate

contact with your insurance provider.

A strongly suggested next step is for you to make an appointment with

the Joint Replacement Institute. http://www.jri-oh.com/ They have

three great surgeons. Direct your preliminary questions to their

Executive Director, Chuck – , ext. 1888. You

can tell him that 4 recent patient - Steve G., R., M.,

and Dave G. told you to give him a call. We were all competively

active pre-op and are relishing the pain free renewal of our lives.

Again, welcome and enjoy your journey.

Hello to all JRI surfacehippies.

I check into this website from time to time. I had a rt. hip C+ by Dr.

Schmalzried two years at ago 58. If I understood Dr. Schmalzried correctly, the

true test results of this surgery will be known after a number of us reach the 5

year mark. In the past the old prosthesises seem to become dislocated or worn

out after 5 years. I think that it is really important for those of us who are

in a study group to keep our yearly eval appointments. I felt Dr.

Schmalzried was a good surgeon and very honest with me preop to tell me both

pros and

cons of resurfacing. I have also appreciated his excellent communication skills

..

It. might be worthwhile for all of us Calif. resurfers to get to together

sometimes in LA I would especially like to find out how some of the resurfers

are

doing after 5 year.

Good idea. It would be fun for all of us to get together anyway. I think it

would

be quite a gathering and a good opportunity for future hippies to meet us and

get first-hand accounts. I live in the Marina and would be happy to help find

a

good location. Donna LBHR 11/13/02 De Smet

Gayle, Donna and others,

I would love to meet in the LA area and Bay Area.

Gayle, thankX for reminding us to keep follow-up appointments and

good to hear from an early resurfacer. I absolutely love Dr. S!!

Hey Des! How about getting together another Bay Area Breakfast? Do

to illness I was unable to attend. I really appreciated you

including me as a pre-hippy. You experience and insight were

invaluable to me.

Gail, Donna, Pamela, and all JRI alumni,

The idea of a JRI patient get together sounds great, but let's

not be too restrictive on our invitations. After all, as interesting

as our experiences are to us, they're probably more meaningful to

potential new patients. You've got me thinking about the

possibilities. I wouldn't be surprised if JRI would be willing to

participate in some fashion. Any thought from others, including non-

JRI folks?

Just as long as we don't have Orthopaedic Hospital cater it. ;-)

Maybe we could get the " Cucaracha " guy to provide music?

Yo Steve...and fellow hippies....

While you're talking about what JRI may be willing to do, I share

with you a thing few know, though it really was no secret. In mid-

April, Dr. Amstutz actually travelled to SF for a JRI Foundation

fundraiser. I can't tell you how I know this. I was not invited.

But I do know it. So...at least we know JRI will go into the

community for some things. I think it might be worth approaching

Chuck about a gathering like this at some point. They've started

adjusting their prices to compete w/ Dr. de Smet, so we know they're

concerned about not losing our business.

I'm still waiting for insurance disposition of my case; but I know

I'd be a lot more committed to stay w/JRI (rather than opt for Ghent)

if I could actually meet some JRI resurfers...and watch you walk, and

dance...and maybe even assume a horse stance, or kick something near

my eye level.

Just a thought, and certainly worth no more than you've paid for it.

Hobble on, hippies.

I'm not a JRI alumnus, so I guess I would prefer to meet on more

neutral ground...like maybe a potluck picnic at a park. There are

some really nice parks on the Westside, but I'm open to any and all

suggestions.

I mentioned before about what a great opportunity this would be for

future hippies to actually see us and talk to us. I know it was a

must for me to meet someone who had gone through the experience so I

could see for myself that it worked. In addition to wanting to see

his scar, I had a million questions to ask. Talking to him face to

face sealed the deal for me where before, I had been unsure and

skeptical.

I would also love to meet other hippies in the LA area just to have

a more personal local support group. Looking forward to meeting you

all. Donna LBHR 11/13/02 De Smet

Maybe we can pick a park, perhaps Cheviot Hills Park right off of

Motor that is easy to get to and we can akk have a pot luck BBQ. How

about we get a list of names of people that are interested and we

circulate something.

I'm interested. My name is and you can see my e-mail address.

I'm interested as well. I live in Colorado, but I'm going to have to

go to LA for my 3-4 month followup sometime in August.
