Guest guest
So, about noon yesterday, Saturday, I picked up Edna (who was on time and totallyready, with tea for her and coffee for me), and off we went.Edna lives in the western part of Berkeley, so we headed west and got onto the freewayto Highway101, across Marin County and to the Pacific Ocean, to Point Reyes andthe Tule Elk Reserve--all part of the National Seashore, and safe from state cuts...for now.Edna agreed to pay for the gasoline to fill my car up upon our return, and I paid for thejaunt itself. We always divide things up fairly. So, off we went, madly shifting clear into 5th gear (the little red Mazda, named "thelittle tomato" just loved that!We went to Lucas Valley Road, to cross from 101 to highway#1--yes it is named after Lucas, whose home is there, and whose production site is in Marin County, too.We observed: Turkey Vultures, Black Birds of several varieties, Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, and of course, the usual cows, steer, goats and young cattle, and westopped to converse with the cattle. Then we got to the top of the hill in the middle of the Tule Elk Preserve, and there werethe Tule Elk, of course, but also a mother and two very young black-tailed deer, alsocalled "mule deer," because of their large ears and small size. Sadly, many of them werekilled off by the former State Park rangers in the misguided belief that these small ani-mals were a threat to the Tule Elk!Then we saw all the Tule Elk! Bulls, cows, young, all. Gorgeous, colored like the varying shades of Siamese cats. And we had never been there when the ocean wasso clear, so we drove all the way out to view more than one hundred miles north andsouth, and went to the actual Point Reyes tourist stop at the farthest part of the Point, and got a good look at the ocean--long looks! On the way back, we passed our favorite sign: "Peace, Love and Grilled Cheeses: ABeauty Salon! There was less traffic coming back than there would have been on aweek day, as there were no commuters--just us tourists. We came back on the South side of Mt. Tamalpais, whereas we had driven out onthe North side of the mountain--which is visible from my very desk as I type!We crossed over the San -Richmond Bridge and got a wonderful view of allthe islands within about 50 miles, and of the bay, San Francisco and all the EastBay cities--Edna lives in Berkeley and I in North Oakland, immediately south ofBerkeley. We took a circuitous route back and visited the shore and the pier at Berkeley andthe local shoreline parks, and finally I drove Edna home at about 6:30 p.m. (We didnot have the money to go out to dinner, as I had just bought three new tires for mycar--the car was gracious, and performed well!) The car just loved the newly pavedsections of the highways in Marin County--as opposed to the pot-hole-ridden streetsand even highways everywhere else. Marin County is very wealthy--in every respect:money, roads, wildlife; and the people are very pleasant as well.Edna and I decided that this was Jaunt Magic Science (MS) as we readily identifiedno end of plants, flowers, bushes, trees, forms of animal life, etc.I so wish that we could have taken each of you (Magic Scene) with us, so this is thebest that I can do. Use your imagination to picture it all, on this aged MAC, it is difficultto send copied photos in a post, so I shall send some on later.Love to all of you, and waving to Akyba and the soon to be Birthday Boy, Robbin,nP.S It hit 84 in Oakland yesterday, was unusually but pleasantly cooler in Marin County..
