Michele,

I don't know anything about white water rafting but I've wanted to

do it for a long time and my family is not in to it. Should we see

if there is enough surfacehippy interest to get a trip together? Do

you have any white water rafting experience? If yes, where?

I've always wanted to do the week long trips down the Colorado

River. I'm usually game to plan adventures depending on the timing

etc...My experiences are limited but I've done the fly in class 5 on

the Shotover in New Zealand. You're basically rafting off

waterfalls...quite a gas! Dan

We sure have a lot of interest! And Class 5 rapids are pretty big -

was that before or after your resurface? Has anyone actually talked

to a doc about it?

Before my resurf I've done baby rapids on the Rogue River in Oregon,

both with friends and with a guide - mostly class 3 and 4 rapids. I

never fell out, but if I remember correctly, it can get kind of

bumpy and jostly - sometimes quite quickly and unexpectedly. But it

is incredibly exhilarating. I think I call my doc and keep y'all

posted...Michele

I like to go do the White Water in West Virginia. No problems at all (class

III - IV rapids, so some of them are pretty bumpy). Matter of fact,

several of the smaller ones i do without a raft (feet first) and that's a

blast.

-> make sure you practice some swimming before you go. You won't need to

really swim, but this is to up your comfort level if you end up in the

drink.

A rafting trip for surface hippies? Sounds kewl, but don't forget we're

scattered all over the place, so the geographic center for us is probably

someplace in the middle of the Atlantic... :o>

Actually, it's probably pretty close to the North Pole. This could

make for some really chilly rafting.

....Way before...like 1985! Honestly, I am not certain that that

level is prudent! Although it was exciting, people do get hurt.

Further, my sense is that although I seek activity and adventure, I

would hate to ruin a perfectly good surgery for a brief moment of

glory. Nonetheless, I am open to look at a hippy trip somewhere.

I still toss out the Colorado river trips that run 5-7 days as I

hear them to be a great experience.

I've often offered to any hippies heading to Maui that I would take

them out for a beginner surf, unless they already have skills in

which case we will seek out something a bit more challenging.

I haven't tried rafting yet, but I do have quite a bit of experience at offshore

rowing. My resurf is scheduled for next week (2nd July at the Wessex Nuffield by

Mr Latham).

My aim is to take part in the annual Jersey to et (that's in France) race,

total distance about 18 nautical miles. Up to a few years ago our fours crew

used to do this in about 2 hours 25 minutes (smooth water) to 3 hours (high

seas).

Even if the rafting takes place in the US, count me in-my wife is American so we

frequently visit her parents in New Jersey.

Sounds great fun

And just imagine that poor polar bear trying to gnaw through the

Hey Dan! I did NZ, too...but I bungy jumped off the bridge, and got

lowered down into the boat! Good 'ole AJ Hackett! :o) I have a

video to prove it, too! Actually, I jumped with my cane - I was on

an around-the-world trip...and bungy jumping was just somethin' I had

to do (this was in '92). Well...that and skydiving...twice! What can

I say, NZ is an outdoor playgroud BIG time!

Anyway...couldn't resist sharing! :o)

Be careful!! I rafted through the Grand Canyon (a 13 day trip) in 1980.

The

craving to go back NEVER goes away!!

The trip I was on was rowed by guides so we didn't paddle and we could sit

in the rafts rathen than astride the tubes. It was an unbelievably awesome

experience that I would love to repeat. I can't see any limitations other than

sitting on the wooden seats in the raft. Physically, I could do it now despite

being 2 months away from a left resurfacing with Dr De Smet (Aug 24). In the

condition I'm in now, I'd just be frustrated by missing much of the prowling

around and exploring side canyons.
