Which leads me to ask, not to you, Jane, but to the EMS world at large: Why are

we still training people on the PASG?

Does anyone out there have a set of adult PASG pants and pump that would work

I heard that PASG is making a comeback, but have been too busy to investigate

that claim further.

Plus, it's important to understand old treatments because some people don't do

as much CE as they should (I was quizzed in pressure points by one department as

a part of bleeding control, but never taught them, as a result of the latest

curriculum.)

They are on the skills list for Texas for folks who are recertifying as

EMT-Basic but have let their certifications lapse or are having to have skills

verified for various reasons. They were still in the last version of PHTLS (I

haven't had the update yet and am not sure when that is set to transpire so I am

unsure of whether they are still in that curriculum?). They are still in use in

some systems.

Is there a legitimate EMT school in this country that does NOT teach pressure

points?? That's part of the 8 hour Red Cross curriculum!

I realize that, and there still is no scientific evidence for their use, that I

know of. Can anybody cite me a study showing improved outcomes with their use?

It's one thing to teach what pressure points are and another thing to advocate

their use to control hemorrhage. There are many things that one should know and

understand in order to be a good practitioner and to understand the implications

of various conditions and injuries. Understanding pressure points is " good to

know " knowledge, but current practice does not indicate using them to stop a

serious hemorrhage. Therefore, knowledge of pressure points probably is not

essential although a part of what would normally be taught in an A&P course.

There are many other examples. For example, at one time rotating tourniquets

were thought to aid in suppression of hydrostatic pressure overload in heart

failure patients with pulmonary edema. Nobody seriously advocates their use

today that I know of, and their use has no scientific basis in valid studies

that I have ever seen. Should we teach them?

I have not heard that PASG is making a comeback. I have not read any literature

or heard of any studies in progress that would lead to that happening. Again, I

ask for anyone who has solid new evidence pointing to the efficacy of PASG to

please post it.

I'm not trying to be difficult. I'm just asking folks to think critically about

what we do.

I was merely passing along some good, old-fashioned heresay. I would also love

to see any studies, yet have not had the time to even search for them, due to

what can only be described as " Terminal Scheduling Failure " .

I'm not advocating teaching them as a part of necessary knowledge. Forgive the

implication of my words; I could also say it's important to read Shakespeare

with an eye for historical context, yet will probably continue to not read it at

all. What I was attempting to convey is that I think it's useful information

under certain circumstances (as is a lot of information).

Good hearsay is always great! Some of it even turns out to be true. You made

your point well and clearly.

One can never know too much. As for reading Shakespeare, I could never get into

it. I opted for the Cliff Notes. LOL.
