Oh, come on, Gene! You cannot possibly expect us to believe that greed and

fraud are not the exclusive domain of private industry! Everyone knows that

public servants are all altruists, beyond reproach! Why heck, I'm sure most

Dallas firemen would work for half their salary because they are so committed to

humanity!

But of course. I'm sure they all tithe their earnings and contribute generously

to charity on a regular basis.

What's going to be interesting is whether or not the US Attorney picks up on

this and goes for criminal charges. The City Manager would be a great target.

Wait... don't get rid of her until she gets a chance to fire the new police

chief! Fire chief too, while she's at it.

I wonder if Billie Myrick is the whistleblower?

Says it in the article; Southwest General Services of Dallas, billed the

government for " Advanced Life Support level ambulance services for all 911

calls, regardless of whether the beneficiary's condition required that level

of service. "

Rumor has it that Southwest General also does billing for more than 20 FD's.

I wonder what the impact would be if they billed all of the FD claims the

way they billed Dallas Fire Rescue? Oh wait, no need to wonder. It'll lead

to the biggest overpayment recovery in the history of Medicare and Medicaid.

Gene has it right. Having read the original filing, it suggests that

Southwest General and the City of Dallas knowingly conspired to to upcode

their claims despite protests on the part of the Relator. If they

find evidence of this, I feel sure that the OIG and the local Asst. U.S.

Attorney will be given a jingle.

Of course. The federal government handsomely rewards those who prosecute

violations of the False Claims Act on behalf of the governemnt. That's what

qui tam suits are all about.

What's really alarming is all those EMS providers who believe that a

Priority 1 dispatch + a paramedic evaluation = ALS1 base rate billable

claim. An interesting element of this suit is the use of DSHS' rules that

define ALS and BLS, thereby restricting ALS1 coding to only those calls that

result in an ALS intervention or invasive procedure. I've never seen that

before.
