Guest guest
I am 42. I was resurfaced april 9th, 2001. Three years ago by Schmalzried. He new I wanted to run again. He stongly suggested brisk walking for awhile before running. I took his suggestions and did a lot of brisk walking for 6 months. I started brisk walking 3 months post op. Around 9 months post op started doing some jogging along with brisk walking. To make a long story short, I have slowly progressed over the three years to running about 15 to 20 miles a week. I ran 7 miles Friday night (a new record for me). The only problem I have had is some pain in my lower buttocks area. I used to get this after 1 mile or so. Know I get it after 3 or 4 miles. I try to run thru the pain as long as it's not overbearing. The pain is less and I can run further today. Good Luck and take it slow. You will gradually see improvement. Guest guest
Margo in Fargo, Sorry to hear about your nerve damage. I guess even excellent doctors like Dr. Gross can’t prevent occasional complications. I’ve been running (along with biking, tennis, skydiving, and other sports) for over 6 years since my C+ by Dr. Amstutz. It’s not the implant that restricts your amount of running, at least not for me. It’s how much pounding can the rest of my body take. The same overuse that led to my hip resurfacing (65+ miles/week running for many years) has also compromised my back and knees to some degree. The more older folks I see running, the more I want to invest in orthopedic companies. Running still has a grip on me but I’m trying to replace some of my weekly mileage with lower impact activities so the rest of my body holds up a little longer. I'm sure you know this, but if you’re running for weight loss, you burn the same amount of calories walking 2 miles as running 2 miles. And the people who seem to know say walking burns fat where running burns glycogen. And for others out there considering running, best check with your OS first. If you get the go ahead, rather than run until you need to stop, try run/walk/run/walk where you transition from running to walking long before you tire out. Whatever you do isn’t it great to no longer be limited by hip disease, even in Fargo Dave > >Reply-To: surfacehippy >To: surfacehippy >Subject: Running? >Date: Thu, 08 Apr 2004 03:17:27 -0000 > >Hey - Hi all of you new surface hippies! Guest guest
Hi Margo, running few times a week for about 2 miles is perfectly ok in my opinion. I am not MD, but I was operated on both hips by Dr. Gross and I ran about 40 miles a week and upon my last visit (1 year check-up) he said hips are A+. However, running is not the only way to lose weight, right. You can bike or use stepping machine or elliptical trainers that can give you a pretty good workouts as well with much less stress on your joints. You can also swim some, I am sure, soon outside as well. Finally, I hate to say this, but eat less, very simple concept. I know all this is easy to say, but for us that have gone a bit " to the other side, " I think we have enough discipline to " keep going strong. " You take care, Miren Re: Running? > Hey - Hi all of you new surface hippies! Guest guest
Margo, I was resurfaced on April 9th, 2001. I have been running since 6 months post op. I have had some problems with what I thought was the sciatic nerve. I went to a PT and he really thinks it's the glute muscle not firing at all when I run. This means the hamstrings have to do all the work. He thinks my pain comes from the hamstring. I have run as much as 7 miles. I can run 2 or 3 with very little discomfort. The longer runs like 6 or 7 cause pain in my lower left buttocks. I am hoping with the exercises that this will go away soon. Guest guest
Margo...and other so-concerned hippy kids... Do you know if your surgeon did posterior incision, or tried " minimally invasive " techniques? I'm told either of them can cause serious sciatic nerve problems. (Keep in mind, however, that I was told this by an OS who refused even to consider resurf as a possibitity. Before I'd found the possibility of resurfacing, I was only trying to find from him the least damaging THR...which is all he was offering.) Every fool has a piece of truth, so...he may have told me something that might make sense in your situations. Alan > > > Hey - Hi all of you new surface hippies! Guest guest
-Margo: It sounds like you had a bad experience with your operation and sciatic nerve. Now I am scared about getting a resurface. Will your sciatic nerve and your foot get back to normal? BM -- In surfacehippy , wrote: > Margo, > > I was resurfaced on April 9th, 2001. I have been running > since 6 months post op. Guest guest
Hi BM, Damaged nerves are one known potential side affect of any form of operation that cuts though flesh or even badly stretches it, like what happens when doing hip surgery of any variety.......... The human nerve system generally follows a pattern and surgeons know where they are...........However sadly a few individuals are wired slightly differently and problems can arise............ I gather it could also be more of a problem if one has had several surgical adventures already existing in the hip area........i.e. my surgeon said he couldn't guarantee that giving me back my hip joint wouldn't activate a sciatic nerve problem that could have been dormant from previous operations - given I had never moved the hip since the last one............. Thankfully for me none of long slits in my flesh have touched the nerve system...........even with several scars now. As always selecting a surgeon with a good deal of experience with hip operations would seem to be helpful here.
