Guest guest
I, too, am interested in how much time must pass before it's okay to ride horses. Anyone out there know? Joyce (Dr Gross, LHR, 2/04)

Guest guest
Hi Roper: While I am not a full-time horseperson like yourself, I do like to ride. I grew up riding, but now only do so occasionally. I went riding at 5 months post-op. I'm sure I could have gone before, but for some reason did not. I did fine. I even took a bit of a tumble dismounting (my muscles were sore because it had been so long) and even the 4 foot drop didn't hurt my hip. I'm sure your doctor will advise you when you can return to riding. There is no reason why you can't live it 24/7 again. Lois C+ 3/27/03 Dr. Mont Any Horseback Riders here after Hip Resurfacing? I am really glad I found this group! I hope this will be an alternative to THR for me! I am a horseback rider, have been all my life & am 46 years old. I have " fairly severe " OA in my right hip, & am having a fair amount of pain (because I can't sit well in the saddle from pain, my jeans wear out on the L hip side, etc Needless to say, to be so unbalanced now on a horse moving at speed is not the safest... Anyone have this resurfacing & able to return to horseback riding? This is a major part of me, & my husband's life & lifestyle too, we live horses 24/7! I've never done any other sport, I don't know what I'd do, if I have to give it up. Thanks all in advance for your replies!

Guest guest
Hi, There was a horse person here when I first joined a couple of years ago......... they are probably off enjoying their horses at this point........ Horse riding has never been mentioned as a no no and how soon after would no doubt be dependant on the shape you are in preop........ how quickly you totally heal and strengthen the operated hip area so it takes the natural stresses of riding etc......... A resurface is practically impossible to dislocate so it has to have some major advantages for continuing horse riding. Edith LBHR Dr. L Walter Syd Aust 8/02 > I am really glad I found this group! We did have a rider here...so help me, I'm horrible with names. le? Try putting that name in the search and see what posts you get. I remember she was pushing wheelbarrows, repairing roofs, and throwing hay pretty quickly. Cindy C+ 5/25/01 and 6/28/

Guest guest
I am also a equestrain person myself. I competed in the local rodeo circuit in Arizona until May of last year. The pain got too great and had a BHR put in by Dr DeSmet in June. I was back riding in Spetember and I am now back on the rodeo circuit with no pain at all. Life is great. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi Tom, That is great! I have a couple questions for you if you don't mind. I am also in AZ, I am curious why you went to Dr DeSmet, instead of the closer Los Angeles Joint Replacement Institute with Dr Amstutz & all? Did you have osteoarthritis of the hip, or another problem of the hip? Thanks so much for your answers!
