Guest guest
Welcome, you've come to the right place and should get lots of good advice. You're on the right track by investigating resurfacing for a young active adult. It offers several advantages over a total hip replacement. I've had both hips resurfaced after I wore them out with overuse, mainly by running. They're every bit as good as the pre-diseased originals and I have absolutely no limitations. You may be surprised to learn that only about 9 surgeons in the US actively perform resurfacings, namely because it's still considered investigation by the FDA. And many insurance carriers use that investigational status as a reason not to cover resurfacings – a sad and harsh reality. Get your friend examined by Dr. Mont – he has an excellent reputation and can advise on the insurance issue as well. Hips can deteriorate to the point where a resurfacing is no longer feasible, so don't wait too long to schedule the exam. If you haven't found it yet, go to http://www.activejoints.com/resurfacing.html. Keep asking questions of us as they come up. The best to you and your friend, Dave C+, Amstutz, 3.24.1998, 2.12.2004 > A 34 yr old male relative has recently been told he needs THR. Guest guest
Barb, I too had a hip resurfaced by Dr. Mont, my right one in February of this year. I gladly drove from Comnnecticut to have it done, and cannot believe the immediate disappearance of the joint pain and pleasure of regaining range of motion. Whatever you do, do not contact your insurance carrier...at all. Let Dr. Mont's staff run interference for you. They do a fine job and it's one less thing for you to worry about. You will be pleased with the service and level of care in the very modern facility at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. Considering it was major surgery, they made it very easy, and sent me on my way all teed up for post-op home health visits and physical therapy. Dr. Mont is a maestro, and known for taking on hard cases. You should consult with him at the very least. Good luck.
