Anyone know of a company hirring medics in the Houston area? I know they all are

but i am looking for one that has good trucks, not 10 year old ones, good

equipment and pay. Asking alot, but who knows maybe I'll get lucky. The

refinnery I was working at as not signed the new contract yet so time to start

looking again. I so cannot wait untill I am done with school.

Thanks

And.....what planet did you just arrive from?? Just

Joking......seriously......over 200 ambulance companies shut down over the past

few months, in Houston. If you find an employed EMT on an ambulance in Houston,

they are with the city, a major company, or one that has contracts for private

pay or H2H. The dialysis/psych industry has been shut down. I do hope you are

not under the impression that you can run out and get a job in Houston, as an

EMT. At least not right now.

Try northstar or transcare. They have been around the longest and also bestcare.

Where did you get the figure of over 200 ambulance companies shut down over the

“past few months†in Houston. Just curious where the facts are.

Thanks in advance,

Ron

For every one of the " two hundred " that closed i'm sure two popped up in their

place and they are shut down now too lol!! you're not looking in the right

places if you cant find a job at mom n pop, they are everywhere in this area.

Now whether or not you're paycheck actually clears the bank, that's a different

story........

Very good observation. They've been taking advantage of the glut of EMTs for

decades now, allowing them to keep turnover high and wages low. Now, with the

turnover of employers contributing to the job shortage, it can only get worse

for us. The guys like you, who have been at this game for too long, I have

sympathy for. But the n00bs, right out of school, I have a hard time

sympathising for when they can't find a job. It's not like they just invested

in four years of college to find this disappointment. It's just 120 hours.

Pretty small price to pay for valuable life lesson: Always do the market

research before you invest. Or, to dumb it down to the NR/DOT level: Look

before you leap.

I have to admit, I pulled that number out of the air.....and I should know

better than to do that. But it's a lot.....places I used

to see 40-50 ambulances waiting to transport, there are just a few now. I'm not

sure about Beechnut Dialysis or Davita Almeda, but the partial hospital on

hornwood is a ghost town now. There used to be ambulances out the drive, down

the street and around the corner at 3pm. I started getting layed of in 2009, and

since then, it has happened 4 times. And I mean with a lay off letter, not that

they just got rid of me. Most were friends that I still keep in touch with.

Jarmese of AW EMS would NEVER have shut her doors if there was a

way around it.In fact, she had JUST turned in the paperwork for Global EMS Inc,

(there are two Globals, hers was the navy blue truck, not the white ones.) The

state almost tripled the fees in the past few years and are very hard on new

licenses. They would always

find something wrong with the application and put a deficiency on it. I think

after two of those, you have to start over and submit a new application. Anyway,

between the fees and Mcare yellow slipping everyone, the companies that still

run are down to skeleton crews and not hiring. Im sure a few are, but you prolly

have to know someone to get in.

I am personal friends with at least 8 owners in this area, and they are all

shutting down, or going to one crew. BUT......the companies I speak of rely

almost solely on dialysis, or psych txp's. I was on the very last AW crew. I

rode with NeNe the DO of the company, and I have known the family

for about 8 years. I heard a LOT about what was going on in the industry. Mcare

started yellow slipping to " Clean House " There were almost 400 ambulance

companies in this region, as compared to 105, back in 1999. Fraud (billing on

unqualified patients, dead patients, etc.) was rampant, but they had to do it,

even though it hurt some reputable companies. We were getting denied on even a

TOTALLY bed ridden patient, D/S, the works, in miserable health. Mcare usually

paid on appeal, but most companies cannot make payroll in the mean time.

I suspect that many patient will die, Mcare will start collecting lawsuits, and

the industry will slowly rebound, but for now, most EMT's I knew in private

transfer EMS have gone on to other things.

Superior Care EMS

Patient Care EMS

Ultra EMS

Advanced EMS (not advanced medics, they are doing fine)

Houston's Choice EMS

Optimum EMS

Eagle EMS (The one down town)

United EMS

United Ambulance

AW EMS

Global EMS

Sunrise EMS

Freedom EMS

Americare EMS (I was on a unit when the FBI hit this one....outright fraud and

money laundering to Russia)

Ameritex EMS

and a couple others that I have either worked for outright, or ridden with,

helping out; They are all out of business or hurting really bad over the past 3

years.

Advanced Medics, Health Quest EMS, Oddesy EMS, AMR, Ace Ambulance, and a few

others seem to be doing ok though.
