Getting to the root of the stem-cell debate

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/opinion/2002002898_collin12.html

The article in the link above gives discussion of both sides of the

stem-cell debate and how it has become a political issue.

I would strongly suggest that we avoid the discussion of party politics in

general on the list as there are people who support both American political

parties as well as those who don't live in the USA. It's okay to discuss

the issues of stem-cell research and other legislation that affects people

with EDS, but let's avoid bashing political candidates on either side as

that is bound to upset others on the list and cause dissent rather than the

support the list is known for.

Sorry Barb~~

I didn't mean to offend.

I thought we were free to express opinions on the list.

You didn't offend. Opinions are okay. I am just making a personal

cautionary statement that it is best not to get into political party issues

on the list. I've seen these things start small and end up hurting people's

feelings and getting out of hand quickly. I am speaking purely as a list

member.

Barb. and anyone else following this thread~~

I just wanted to tell everyone that I was not " bashing " the Bushes.

Also, I was not getting into " political party issues " . This debate has

differing opinions on both sides of the isle.

What I was making a comment on is that such a public figure (any public

figure- political or not) should have all the facts (or speak the facts when

clearly proven and known) before they go public on such a thing. I would

have made this comment no matter the public figure making the statement -

political figure or not.

This public (and very influential) person's comments were not about the

planed aborted fetuses grown and aborted specifically for stem cells. I too

am NOT for fetuses being " grown " for this use but there are so many other

outlets. One in particular, parents having frozen embryos that are slated

to be " disposed of " because they have no " use " for them. These precious

little ones will be " disposed of " no matter the use. Also, what about the

spontaneously aborted fetuses? I for one had a miscarriage some time ago

and would have loved to have had someone tell me of such research that I

could have contributed to. After all, my tiny baby was dead and ended up in

Biohazard container in the hospital morgue. This, in my opinion, was a

total waste considering she might have been a contributor to the research.

What a great opportunity to have such a legacy and to be able to contribute

to the research into genetic diseases like, well. let's say EDS?

I never intended to get into a " political " debate. . I would never impose

my personal opinion about our government's participation in Stem Cell

Research.

What bothers me is a public person miss-speaking saying " it is not all

cracked up to be what everyone says it is " for political or personal

reasons. This person could have easily said, " there are proven successes in

stem cell research but in my opinion it is a slippery slope to have the

government involved in this business. "

Again, I am sorry to offend anyone regarding this issue. I would never want

to hurt someone's feelings on this wonderful list. Looking back, perhaps I

should have not mentioned Mrs. Bush by name but she WAS the one making false

statement!

In the end it seems to me since WE have a genetic disease it is a fair topic

for discussion.

Respectfully,

Debbi

Debbi,

I didn't say you were.

Again. Didn't say you were. Simply cautioning anyone on the list to avoid

doing so.

> What I was making a comment on is that such a public figure (any public

> figure- political or not) should have all the facts (or speak the facts

Point well made.

Again, I didn't say that you said anything wrong. I was merely cautioning

anyone who may have taken it as a political issue to avoid jumping in along

party lines. The issues of stem cell research and other legislative issues

related to EDSers are perfectly okay topics, in my opinion. All I was

cautioning against was replies that might get party-politics involved,

specifically mention of party affiliation and voting and reference to other

political issues which are not directly related to the discussion of stem

cell research. My point was to avoid party-based political discussion

before it became a problem.

> In the end it seems to me since WE have a genetic disease it is a fair

> for discussion.

You are absolutely correct. It just so happens that while this is a

research issue, it has also become a political issue and there may be a

tendency for some people to politicize the discussion along party lines.

That was my only point.

Thanks Barb!

I am very glad to hear that I was not out of line.

The last thing I want is to, offend, and start a " discussion " AKA: fight

that would create hard feelings.
