Our own stories and inheritance patterns sure do make interesting thesis I would think!] I considered genetics for a bit back in college, but never went past 2 classes. Guest guest
Name: Burke Country: USA Age: 27 Type of EDS: hypermobility Occupation: right now, stay at home mom...future: I will go back to school once the insane number of doctor's visits for myself and my family slows down to a trickle (I hope). I am 3 independent study classes and 1 upper division !!!*GENETICS*!!! class away from a Bachelor of Arts in General Biology. 1 of the independent study classes is my bachelor's thesis, which I hope to do on something related to EDS...possibly tracking EDS symptoms in my extended family (first, second, third, etc cousins, aunts, uncles). I am the only one currently diagnosed with EDS. Before my health got so bad and I dropped out of college, I wanted to be a doctor, and I almost applied to medical school. (Took the MCAT and did well, I was just burnt out on school.) Volunteering/Hobbies: reading, book collecting, cooking, baking, writing, various handcraft-type stuff, and the list goes on. I am trying to start an EDNF branch in the Kansas City area, but I haven't started yet on the paperwork that requires. I am actively involved in my church, though I have had to quit the volunteer work that I used to do, because my body just can't handle it. Current issues/stressors: My 13 month old son probably has EDS (he is flexible to a mind-boggling degree--Olympic gymnasts are less flexible than he is!!) and he has gross motor delays and speech delays. My husband and I both have symptoms of Asperger's Syndrome and we need to visit a psychiatrist for diagnosis (but I am suspicious of most shrinks because there are too many of them who ought to be the patients, not the doctors). Also, my HMO only covers visits to something like 3 participating psychiatrists, so I will probably have to pay the full fee to see someone who is capable of diagnosing AS and isn't a [insert your favorite derogatory term here for doctors with preconceived notions and agendas]. Plus, I am having serious problems with vertigo again...the neurologist, otoneurologist, and other doctors can't figure out why have had the problems in the past. Current joys/announcements: I am waiting for my scheduling call for the NIH study. I hope to get my son and mom in the study too. My son, , is now pulling himself up to standing!! Standing on his tiptoes, but standing nonetheless! , my daughter, is better behaved than she was several months ago...though she still always says she likes to disobey " because it makes her happy. " She is 3 and she uses that excuse, LOL! She is always saying the funniest things, but I forget them because my memory is horrid.
