Depends on the kid and what they already know about the field and such.

Cookbook answers don't work.

Of course if I want to stir a pot I'd say ..... " Go to the Fire Academy and

get a paying job " or " Skip Medic school and do an RN program " or perhaps

" go to the police academy "

I would never discourage anyone on purpose, but I would give them enough

information to make their own informed decision. I like my chosen profession,

but not everyone will or should. That's ok too.

I wouldn't discourage. I would just say no if they ask if they should join.

I had a bunch of people tell me not to get into the profession. I didn't care,

because I wanted to do it and still do. I think that if they really want to be

in the career, they shouldn't have to ask, or care what you think.

But perhaps I'm a tad more stubborn than others.

I explain to them the requirements including all certifications most good

employers require so that they are marketable to the premier services. Being a

paramedic can be rewarding but it is demanding and to gain employment in a

service with high retention numbers there area many certifications and classes

that require alot of time. I also always recommend getting a four year degree

to allow for options when the burn out arises or you. have an oppurtunitype to

move into managment. Most importaintly I stress the importaince of dedication

due to the ever changing industry.
