I knew what a NM was had no idea it was also a League?

I also have a specific memory from the 5th grade where I was asked how many

feet in a mile and I spouted off 5,280 and was promptly labeled as a nerd.

I get into all sorts of trouble with metrics with my international clients

seemingly daily when I refer to a deuce and a half and such.

I am oft quoted as saying if I could do math I'd be a Paramedic instead of

a Fire Chief but wait I make much more than nearly all the paramedics I

know hence I am not so dumb after all.

Flame at will.

A league is approximately 3000 fathoms, give or take. :)

A league is a nautical mile, which is about 15% longer than a regular

ummm....no.

there are several different measurements billed as a league, the most

common being the equivalent of an hour's walk (about statue 3 miles, or about

5100 yards, 2550 fathoms). The Roman league is about half that.

your description of a Nautical mile is accurate, but it is not directly

related to a league, unless you can walk on water.

Louis,

A league is approximately 3000 fathoms, give or take. :)

A league is a nautical mile, which is about 15% longer than a regular

mile. It is the distance of one minute of the arc of a circle around the earth.

and the reason for using those units in surveying was? (Hint: they didn't

have laser stadiometers 'back in the day.')

(incidentally, acres are a measure of area, and only related to the square

mile you mention, not the units of length that you are otherwise talking

about.)

A league is a group of players or teams competing in sporting events.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Its a unit of measure that was common in England

and Europe in the 1700s. Its roughly equivalent to 3 miles. Statute on

land, nautical at sea. Texas got to keep their public lands in the treaty

that granted them statehood and the national limit at the time was 3 leagues,

so Texas got to keep their 3 league territorial limit. The reason for 3

leagues was that was about max range on a shipboard cannon at the time.

Sorry to correct you, but according to what I learned as a youthful

navigator and confirmed by UNC Chappel Hill dictionary of measurements a rod is

5.5 yards or 16.5 feet. In your own example you equate 320 rods to 1

statute mile (i.e. 5280 feet). If you do the math, you will see that the rod

equals 16.5 feet.

Yeah, the league is a bizarre unit, much like the fathom. One interesting

tidbit I noted, the fathom (6 feet) is believed to have come from the

length of both arms stretched.

Texas and other states have many measurements in old deeds that confound young

lawyers today. Old surveys are in links, chains, rods, and sections.

A rod is 33.5 feet; a chain is 4 rods, and a mile is 80 chains or 320 rods. A

section of land is a mile square, 80 chains, 320 rods, 5280 feet, 640 acres. A

link is 7.5 inches, and 25 links equals a rod.

Now, how many of you medics know how much a quarter grain of morphine is?
